What I wish I would’ve known: High school homework isn’t the same as college homework

href=”http://blogs.bgsu.edu/pieces/files/2012/09/klebe.jpg”>During high school I thought I knew all that I needed to know when it came to schoolwork.

I decided to take four AP classes my senior year of high school. I thought taking all these AP classes would help prepare me for the workload I was about to encounter at BGSU.

I was wrong.

I earned a low GPA my first semester of my freshman year at BGSU. I didn’t understand why my grades were suffering. One thing I never did in high school was read the textbooks. The teacher always taught us what … Continue Reading

Nobody Tells You by Courtney

On a bench outside of South Hall, in 20-degree weather, I sat, sobbing. My dad had just called to tell me the worst news I have heard in my life: my baby, my 15-year-old Pomeranian, Chickie, had just been put down. Logically, I knew she was old, I knew she was sick and getting sicker. I knew it was coming, but I couldn’t take knowing that I wasn’t there. To make it worse, I was supposed to go home Saturday for someone’s birthday party. My dad called on Thursday.

Kindness of Strangers by Courtney

You know that thing that dogs do when they don’t understand something? When they perk their ears up and cock their head to one side, one ear parallel with the ground?  That’s about the way my friend and I looked when we arrived at my car the weekend after the big snowstorm. Utterly confused about how to retrieve my car from the two feet of solid snow and ice surrounding it.

Spanish Lesson by Courtney

I didn’t understand a single word he said. I had taken four years of Spanish in high school, so the next step was SPAN 352: Composition and Conversation 1. The only problem was that in high school my teachers still spoke English. This instructor wouldn’t speak more than 10 words of English for the entire semester. Maybe it would have been better to take it in the fall of my freshman year rather than the spring, or maybe I would’ve been just as lost. Point being, I sat there for 50 minutes staring at this instructor and didn’t pick up more than a few words. Maybe I really wasn’t suited for being a Spanish minor.

Packing Necessity by Courtney

Someone really should warn you before you ever move in that you will need, at some point in time, a snow-shovel. No, really, if you have a car on campus, you need to bring a snow-shovel when you move in. Well, as I’m sure you’ve figured out, my naïve freshman self did not know that a snow-shovel would ever come in handy. During my first BG winter, I had to learn the hard way. Continue Reading

Going Home by Courtney

Every time I drive down I-75 from Bowling Green to Dayton it’s raining. Granted, I really don’t drive to Dayton unless the campus is closed for break, but still. Every time that I have packed up my car and stopped at the Starbucks drive-thru for my customary fuel, there has been the slow start of raindrops on my windshield. I’ve never been a big fan of clichés, but this coincidence is just too good to pass up. Continue Reading

Backstreet’s Back by Courtney

I am not ashamed to claim a love for the Backstreet Boys. I’m not a diehard fan by any standard, but I do quite enjoy a listening to “Shape of My Heart.” But in high school, this wasn’t exactly a fact I advertised. Continue Reading

Changing my Major by Courtney

I was never going to be that student. Everyone says it’s perfectly normal for a college freshmen to change their major several times throughout their first year, but that wasn’t me. Continue Reading
