Valentine’s Day by Caitlyn
So the whole weekend has been revving up for Valentine’s Day! “Come make Valentine’s for your Falcon-tine!” And Outtakes has been filled with chocolates, candy hearts, stuffed animals and even roses. Yet another year I will spend single, but I definitely don’t view Valentine’s Day the way I did when I was younger.
Traditionally, single females like to drown in self pity during Valentine’s Day, say “Woe is me!” and complain about being single, and by complaining, I mean eating with the two most reliable people in the world – Ben and Jerry. But that is not the way I will spend my Valentine’s Day!
I do not think that Valentine’s Day is a holiday just for couples. I don’t think it was designed that way. I think that Valentine’s Day is for everyone! It is a chance to remember how lucky we are to have such wonderful friends and family and realized how truly loved we are.
Single ladies, go treat yourself sure, but don’t wallow in all that self pity. You will probably see couple smooching and people laughing and giggling together, but don’t feel alone – grab your girlfriends, go out to eat and thank them for being the best of friends.
While Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday and is a commodification of love, it is still a great reminder to remember how lucky we are to have each other. Sometimes, we need that reminder because life gets the best of us and we take others for granted.
I know it is a little cheesy, but I love Valentine’s Day. I even have little valentines to give to people who have made my life that much better. You know, the cute little kid valentines you gave you in elementary school? THOSE! Maybe you should look at Valentine’s Day this way- it is a chance to make someone else’s day a little brighter. Just a couple of my thoughts as Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching.
