””Johnny, Johnny Come Home”” is a 1989 song recorded by Norwegian band Avalanche. It was their debut single and can be considered as its signature song. Released in March 1989, it helped launch the band’s career, achieving a smash success in France, where it topped the chart, and also in Norway it was a top three hit, but its sales remained conifidential in other countries.

Song information
Written by Vinton Hoover and Avalanche’s member Kjetil Rosnes, ‘Johnny Johnny Come Home’ was published twice : first in late 1988, with a red cover single, then in March 1989 with a blue one containing a new remix. The refrain is composed of the title repeated eight times and many onomatopoeias (‘Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na’). The song is available on many compilations such as ”Boulevard des hits volume 8”, ”La Discothèque du XXè siècle – 1988”, ”Nostalgie Classiques 80” and ”Summer klub80 Volume 2”. Two songs with almost the same title, ‘Johnny Come Home’, by Fine Young Cannibals in 1985, then by The Men They Couldn’t Hang in 1987, are not related to Avalanche’s one.

Chart performances
In France, the single debuted at #43 on April 1, 1989, and climbed regularly until reaching the top ten in its sixth week. It topped the chart from it tenth week and remained there for eight consecutive weeks. Then it almost kept on dropping and totaled 17 weeks in the top ten and 26 weeks in the top 50. To date, the song is the 662th bestselling single of all time in France. In Norway, the song was ranked in the top for 11 weeks from the 27th week of 1989, including a peak at #3 in its sixth week. The song was also released in Germany, but failed to reach the chart.

Jacques Collebaut

Jacques Collebaut: “

Lisenn:

”’Jacques Collebaut”’, also called ”’Jacquet de Mantoue”’ (or ”’Jiachetto di Mantoua”’ in italian) , was a Breton composer, one of the great representant of the Rinascimento.

Jacques Collebaut was born in Vitré, Brittany, but we practically know nothing about his childhood. He has been confounted with the Flemish composer Jack of Berchem who was also in Italy at the same period. Jacques Collebaut was probably a relative of the eulogist Antoine Colebault, also nammed Bidon, who served the Duke of Ferrara from 1511 to 1517, and later the pope Leon X at Rome.

He composed several motets around 1520. In 1525 Jacques Collebaut was serving the Court of Este in Ferrara. He settled in Mantua in 1526 and during 30 years he kept the highest place in the musical life. He got the citizenship in 1534 and from 1534 to 1559 he held the post of master of chapel at the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Cathedral. The cardinal Ercole Gonzaga (1505-1563), who was to be chairman of the Council of Trent had much estim and affection for the Breton composer.

We know Jacques Collebaut lost his wife in 1527 and got maried again. We also know he didn’t make his fortune as when he died on the 2nd of October 1559 he left many debts. His wife and his daughter got poor and the cardinal granted them with a pension.

Jacques Collebaut is one of the great masters of the sacred polyphony of the Rinascimento with Josquin and Palestrina. A contemporary of the Counter-Reformation period, he was a prolific, famous and admired composer. The 1520-1540 period was probably the most prolific one of his life, composing many masses and motets, many of which have been published.

Opened on 17 July 1954, the ”’pont de Recouvrance”’ is a bridge in Brest, France across the river Penfeld. It was the largest vertical lift bridge in Europe from its construction until the opening of the Pont Gustave-Flaubert in 2008. It links the bottom of the rue de Siam to the quartier de Recouvrance, replacing a swing bridge (the pont National) destroyed by Allied bombardment in 1944.

Each pylon is 70m high and the 525-tonne moving cradle is 88m long.

Oscar Schmidt Inc.: “

Spoonamore: Created a page regarding the Oscar Schmidt Company and related Zither and AutoHarp information

The Oscar Schmidt Company. (aka) Oscar Schmidt Lap-Harp and Zither Company, Oscar Schmidt Musical House, and Oscar Schmidt International.

The Oscar Schmidt Company designed and manufactured numerous models of parlor instruments including Lap-Harps, Auto-Harps, Gizmo-Harps, Chickering-Harps, Germania-Harps, Zithers, Cord-Zithers, Regent-Zithers and Ukelele. The company, now owned by Washburn Corporation, continues to manufacture AutoHarps and Ukeleles.

Founded by Oscar and Otto Schmidt in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1871, the company applied for dozens of patents in musical instruments and related equipment. The Oscar Schmidt Company was formally incorporated in 1911 and at the companies peak in the early 1920’s, the company had manufacturing facilities in five cities.

The company’s parlour music instruments were relatively easy to play by amatuers. Oscar Schmidt designed small, portable, durable, easy to learn instruments useful for family entertainment in the decades between the civil war and the emergence of radio and television.

The company’s products were sold primarily door to door by traveling musical salesmen from the early 1880’s until 1965. Lay-away payment plans coupled with well made steel and wooden travel cases made the Oscar Schmidt companies a popular choice for people who wished to buy an instrument they planned to take to classes, parties or other gathering.

The company was also notable for it’s usage of current events as a marketing tool. Each year the company would offer new ‘special editions’ of it’s products linked to newsworthy events likely to appeal to the sympathy of customers the door to door salesforce would meet. Among the events warranted special edition instruments included: Presidential Elections, The Sinking of the Titanic, The Flood at Jamestown, Lindberg’s Crossing of the Atlantic, Alaskan Statehood, Haiwain Statehood and numerous battles of World Wars I and II. These ‘special editions’ would include a small image or dedication commemorating the event and pieces of sheet music with music written about the recent event. The Oscar Schmidt Travelling Salesmen were famous for keeping detailed records of the buying habits of customers, and the selection of ‘special editions’ was made annually with the intent to sell additional instruments to existing customers.

Oscar Schmidt Parlour Instruments are frequently found today in the attics of old homes, at estate auctions, or in antique stores. A few music stores and web sites are devoted to these parlour instruments. They remain easy to play, durable and thus are popular with some music teachers for the same reasons they were popular with the public before the advent of radio and television.
