PICNICS

Parents Involvement with Children, Nurturing Intellectual Curiosity in Science (PICNICS)

About PICNICS program

The PICNICS program aims to engage students and parents to inform and educate them about the importance of sciences & technology and how they impact their day-to-day life. The PICNICS program is designed to encourage high school students in 9-12th grades to consider science as their career. To accomplish this the program closely co-ordinates with local Fargo high school(s) to provide opportunities for high school to perform research at NDSU during summer. The students are selected based on recommendations from school teachers/administrators. During the program that typically lasts for 6-7 weeks they experience a cutting edge research atmosphere with organized meetings, similar to what a graduate student will experience during the initial months of his/her research career. At the end of the program, the student present their research/experience they gained in a public presentation.

The success of public outreach programs like the PICNICS program depends on the collective efforts of many people and is not driven by one person. We thank the faculty, Chemistry and Biochemistry and the adminstrators at NDSU for their contribution to the success of the program.

We thank the National Science Foundation for helping us initate the program in the Fargo-Moorhead (FM) area. Research funding numbers: CHE-1465075, CHE-1213880, CAREER, CHE-0748525
