PICNCIS program
Parents Involvement with Children, Nurturing Intellectual Curiosity in Science (PICNICS)
- A total of 42 students have particpated in the PICNICS program from 2007. We thank the National Science Foundation (CHE-1465075, CHE-1213880 and CAREER, CHE-0748525) for helping us initate the program in the Fargo-Moorhead (FM) area. The success of public outreach programs like the PICNICS program depends on the collective efforts of many people and is not driven by one person. We thank the faculty, Chemistry and Biochemistry and the adminstrators at NDSU for their contribution to the success of the program.

The PICNICS program is designed to bring both parents and students in organized school meetings to inform and educate them about the importance of sciences & technology and how they impact their day-to-day life. The PICNICS program is designed to make high school students in 9-12th grades to consider science as their career. To accomplish this Prof. Siva has given two seminars at local Fargo high school(s) on their back to school night. The students from Fargo area high shcools were selectd based on the recommendations from school teachers/adminstrators The selected students worked during summer to learn about chemistry and research. They worked along graduate students and post-doctoral scientists and gained valuable experience in a competitive research atmosphere. They also participated in weekly group meetings and in day-to-day activities. In short, they experienced what a graduate student will experience during the initial months of his/her research career.

In summer 2011, the PICNICS program evolved and gave opportunity to 4 Fargo area high school students who did a summer internship at the Department of Chemistry and carried out research. They also presented a poster at a reception hosted by the department and the college.
