Because of its strategic location on top of the second Chickasaw Bluff along the Mississippi River, two forts were built near the town in the [[Civil War]]. Fort Randolph is no longer in existence and Fort Wright, which was built in [[1861]] by the state of Tennessee to defend Memphis in the Civil War. In 2008, only a powder magazine is left of Fort Wright.<ref name=TipCtyGuide/>
[[Union Army]] soldiers under the command of [[General William Tecumseh Sherman]] burnt down the town in [[1862]].<ref name=TNMarkers/>
In 2008, the community consists of two dozen dwellings with no major industry or business present.
