The Haida G was commissioned by millionaire Max Fleischmann. Designed by naval architects Cox and Stevens, once completed in 1929 she left the Krupp Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel and sailed via the Panama Canal to Fleischmann in Santa Barbara. Originally named the Haida after the native tribe of Queen Charlotte Island she was built to last and travel great distances. Powered by two Krupp 6L40/67M 550hp diesel engines and with a fuel capacity of 150 tones she was able to sail from San Francisco to Singapore without stopping.<ref>Haida G official site</ref>

In 1940 she was sold to the US Navy and renamed the USS Argus. On the 29th October 1944 she was called on to rescue sailors from the Liberty vessel John A Johnson that had been sunk by a German submarine. Somewhat ironically, Haida’s builders later went onto construct 131 U-boats for the German army during the 2nd World War.

After the war she was decommissioned and sold to Egyptian millionaire Maurice Ada who named her Sarina.

Having spent many years based in Alexandria, Sarina was subsequently owned by US industrialist Larry Green, British MP Loel Guiness, and film producer Robert Stigwood. In 1981 she was sold again and renamed Rosenkavalier. A further 18 years later having had Greek and Japanese owners she again changed hands in 1999. Well aware of her past, her new owner renamed her Haida G.

Her hull and engines were completely overhauled, she was brought up to date technologically and turned into a modern luxury yacht while retaining her early 20th Century look and feel.
