”’Flip-top box”’ is a generic term used to describe a paperboard box having an integral lid that opens the top section of the box when said integral lid is flipped back. Most flip-top boxes include an inner-frame wherein the lid section of the box is kept closed, or locked into, when in the closed position. Flip-top boxes have been used historically to package cigarettes. The paperboard used to manufacture these boxes typically consists of SBS, or solid bleached sulfate, with a thickness in the range of 8 to 12 points. The inner-frame, however, is usually manufactured with a thinner paperboard thickness to add flexibility during closing.

An ”’Ejecting Flip-Top Box”’ consists of a flip-top box including a carrier cartridge that floats, or ejects upward upon the pulling up of a ribbon. The ribbon could either be attached to the cartridge or be set underneath the cartridge so that upon extending said ribbon upward said cartridge will float up. The Ejecting Flip-Top Box is a new concept in environmental friendly packaging that is used to dispense cosmetic articles thereby eliminating the need for plastics. The idea was brought to the U.S. Patent Office by Daniel de la Rocha for which U.S. Patent No. 5,330,056 was issued and subsequently licensed to Claridan, Inc. ”’The use of an Ejecting Flip-Top Box offers an interesting and practical substitute to cigarette boxes”’. For example, EUROUGE is an ejecting flip-top box that dispenses cosmetic articles such as lipstick, eyeliner pencils, and etc… in a package resembling a cigarette box.
