Dr. Scott Martin will be presenting on the Strickman Filter at the Brownbag Research Forum held on Wednesday, April 30 at 12:30 in the History Conference Room. Martin’s research talk is entitled “The Rise and Fall of the Strickman Filter: A Cautionary Tale in the Era of Big Pharma and the Corporate University.” It concerns the sponsorship of a supposedly revolutionary cigarette filter by Columbia University in 1967, and the implications of this incident for current debates about the role of universities in the research and development of pharmaceuticals. The talk and paper are based on the presidential address Martin gave at the Alcohol and Drugs History Society in June, 2013, at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK.
