Today we talked about the idea of literacy.  Some of the points brought up in defining literacy and reflecting on literacy included:

  • An ability to read and writing (the two most common components).
  • An ability to understand or apply what is read/written.
  • Literacy is a privilege.
  • Blogging is a new literacy act.

This is from out discussion about defining literacy.  Remember that each group was allowed to use only the specific source they picked from the “Resource Cards” pile.  Here are the notes I took from our discussion and your answers.

  • Google: literacy is the ability to read, write, and comprehend various forms of texts
  • Wikipedia: the ability to read, writing, or the ability to use language to read, write, listen or speak
  • Youtube: signs and symbols having meaning.  We learn from experiences
  • Example from Youtube Group: we see signs daily so in a Foreign country and see a coke sign we know we can drink coca-cola
  • Library: the ability to read a short passage
  • Group discussion: Being able to function in society ….communicate using common sense
  • Survey: most important component of literacy? understanding, communicating, then reading
