Visual analysis

Start by posting the visual you are analyzing to your blog; Then, with a partner talk through the following questions. Post notes of your discussion to your blog.

~My visual was designed for this audience: (who is the audience that is supposed to be affected by the image?)

It was designed for the audience that already listens to the band or even those who don’t.  It has a creepy vibe to it and shows a darker side of rock n roll.

~The visual was created by this person/company/agency:

Warner Bros. Records.

~The text around the image or in the visual itself tells me: (what does it say? What does it mean?

It gives the name of the band and the title of the album itself.  On the tombstone it also has foREVer which is in honor of their drummer who passed away last Christmas time.  His name was the REV.

~How does the text interact with the image (s)?  (is it necessary for you to understand the message?)

The text that reads foREVer is huge in this album cover.  The album cover has a generally creepy and hellish vibe to it.  The text on the tombstone is the name of their drummer who died.

~ Social and cultural issues depicted or suggested by the visual include:

For them it is a tribute to their drummer. This whole album revolves around this concept.  I believe for them it was a way to cope with the passing of such a close and loved friend.

~The historical knowledge that I need to understand the visual includes:

Well all of the A7X albums have included the death bat which is there symbol and is also represented in this one as a grim reaper.  The grim reaper is associated with death and obviously this album deals with death and a lot of dark problems.

~The visual relates to these other images, ideas, texts that I know of or that I researched:

Well it relates to A7X’s past albums in many ways.  Besides a couple the album covers are usually very intricate.  They are not ever real pictures.  They are always drawings usually conveying a feeling of death or chaos or tragedy in some way.  Every album cover does include their symbol which is called the death bat.  It is a skull with bat wings and is a key factor in the band because it is unforgettable.  You know exactly what it is when you see it.

~The purpose of the visual is:

The purpose is to capture your eyes right away with a very unique picture.  The creepy vibe is something different than most artists will use these days.  The purpose is also to describe the feelings that the band had.  It shows their emotions as they were writing/recording this entire album.  It is also being used as a tribute to a great friend who was lost.

Thesis Statement for Essay #2

As technology advances, we as consumers are turning the world of entertainment into a desolate waste of space, sapping the meaning out of works of art that were so well created for our enjoyment.

Goldwasser essay questions and notes

Making Connections

I probably only spend an hour or less reading each day.  I typically only read my textbooks for classes and magazines from time to time.

The information that I look up each day ranges from course materials to guitar tabs.  I like to look up many things about guitar players and bands that I like.  Most commonly I will use the internet to look up all of these things. It is just the easiest way to find everything that I need.  My answers would definitely be different without the internet. I use it for everything.

Goldwasser is saying how are you going to know something unless someone tells you about it and it easy to look it up on the internet but you won’t look unless someone tells you to look for it.  I believe she is right in her thinking because its up to the parents or teachers to introduce these topics.

A Well Presented Issue

It reframes the issue by saying the kids in this generation are expanding many topics like the presidential debate on youtube.  This generation puts out ads and buys so many products even by accident. We is talking about Goldwasser’s generation.  They is talking about today’s my generation.

A Well Supported Position

In the 7th paragraph Goldwasser is saying that her generation is afraid of ours.  She uses evidence like how we drove the presidential debates onto youtube and we will probably determine this election.  She also states that we are responsible for the enduring consumer cultural phenomenon like ipod, itunes, movies, and coffee.

An Effective Counterargument

I think the strategy of restating the common core is very effective for her readers.  Using someone else’s points in the opposite way is pretty much like throwing the garbage right back in their face.  Personally I like that a lot. Someone who who can throw a punch right back has my attention and I believe others in my generation also.

Audience Awareness Activity

Response to parents…

It really wasn’t even what you would call a party.  It was just a get together to eat some pizza, watch some T.V. and just hang out.  We didn’t do anything wrong and obviously the house is fine.  It’s not burnt down and nothing is broken.  The only reason the police was called was because we were playing some music and the neighbors are really old.  They don’t understand what fun is and it was only eleven at night when they called the police.  It’s not a big deal at all.

Response to the police…

Officer I am very sorry for the disruption I have caused.  I know the noise level got a little out of hand and I promise it won’t happen again.  We were just listening to some music and didn’t realize how loud it really was.  I was just trying to hang out with some friends and have a good time before I go off to college in the Fall.  I’ll make sure that I keep the noise level down next time to avoid disrupting the peace.

Response to friend…

Dude I can’t believe you missed my party! It had to be the party of the year.  There was so many people here bro and one of my friends ended up bringing a keg.  It was so tight.  We were blasting music all night and everyone was dancing.  Not to mention all the hot girls that showed up.  Dude the cops even got called! It was so crazy!  I just got off with a warning because of the noise so nothing serious went wrong.  That was probably the craziest night ever bro. I wish you would’ve came.
