Dr. Scott Martin presented his original research on the Strickman Filter in the Brownbag Research Forum on Wednesday, April 30. The lecture was part of his keynote presentation at last summer’s annual meeting of the Alcohol and Drugs History Society in London, which also made him president of the group.
Titled “The Rise and Fall of the Strickman Filter: A Cautionary Tale in the Era of Big Pharma and the Corporate University,” Martin’s lecture addressed the sponsorship of a supposedly revolutionary cigarette filter by Columbia University in 1967, and the implications of this incident for current debates about the role of universities in the research and development of pharmaceuticals.
