Shape research

There might not be much more to say about the symbolism of shapes that was not discussed in class or in the handout. At any rate I’ll start with the circle.

Circle– Symbolizes enclosure, unity, eternity and so on.

Square– Symbolizes rigidity, strength, masonry or the surface of the earth.

Triangle (point facing up)– Mountains, victory, achievement, the female sex and among others.

Triangle (point facing down)– Symbolizes a blade, the male sex and the sinister.

Horizontal line– The passing of time; the beginning and the end.

Vertical line– Symbolizes the upright human figure or the relationship between heaven and earth.

I also found an interesting concept, synesthesia. More commonly associated with hearing colors and tasting sounds, synesthesia also studies the way our brain perceives shapes in relationship to feelings and language. There is evidence in a particular study (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia) which involves two shapes and participants reactions to them.
