Teen Dating Violence Prevention PSA

Throughout this whole commercial there was constant vibration and beeping noises coming from a man dressed up as a cell phone. There was also a girl in this commercial and throughout every activity she did he would be right next to her the whole time. It first started at the beginning of the say where the girl was sleeping in her bed, and then bothered by the beeping of the “cell phone.” After hearing a beep you hear him saying “G-morning sunshine, wake up. You better text me back.” It then goes into her kitchen where she is eating breakfast with her family, and you hear the cell phone beeping again. You then hear the boy in the cell phone outfit say “Hey, did you tell your parents about us?” After breakfast she starts to walk to school. On the way the boy in the cell phone outfit is walking rather close to her as in he is invading her personal space. He then says “Let’s skip first period together. Did you get all my texts?” He then continues to text her throughout other scenes of the film asking where she is, and what she is doing. He begins to get more aggressive with his questions. He constantly asks where and who she is with, and that it is lame if she is with her friends. As the girl continues not to talk throughout this PSA we get the impression she is ignoring him. He continues to ask questions, and asked the girl to send him “nude pics.” It sounded as if it was an order or command rather than a question. At the very end of this PSA we see a text that says, “When does caring become controlling?” As the viewer is reading the text you hear some music playing in the background that almost sounds like carousel music with a whimsical tone to it.
This commercial was representing the clinginess of texting, and always having your cell phone on you. Everyone gets the impression you NEED to text someone back, and when does texting switch from being fun and optional, to annoying and controlling? Throughout this PSA we see a girl having to deal with her boyfriend in this scenario constantly texting her, and her not having anything to say. This commercial was rather annoying to watch because of the constant beeping, and that was probably the main goal the creators were trying to make. It is annoying to have to text someone 24/7 and many do not realizing they actually are. The text at the end was to ask the viewer’s when caring becomes controlling? There is probably not a specific answer to this question being stated but rather an opinionated response as the answer. The music that was playing over the text had a carousel ring to it with a whimsical tone. This could have been to represent a dream like atmosphere for the viewers to actually get them to think about the question in front of them being asked.
However, some viewers may overlook this message and think something differently. Since it was two teens playing the role of the boy and girl, older aged people say forty years and higher may see this as a way to make fun of teens for constantly texting each other. This commercial was to just make fun of the people who are always on their phone, and constantly texting every second of the day. The older adults could completely disregard the whole message as a whole and just pay attention to the annoying beeping sound, and create their own interpretation of the PSA without focusing on the rest. This PSA could be stereotyping teens and their texting habits as a whole, and teens could be offended by this presentation of how others view them.

Children’s Mental Health

Throughout this commercial the creators usage of filming is very distinct. They tend to use a lot of mise-en-scène, which is the “placing of scenes” to help tell the story, or visual theme. We obviously know this commercial is about children’s mental health, but there is much more to support it throughout the clip. In the commercial it shows kids in many different atmospheres, which could show the viewer that mental health is everywhere, and it shows the kids in a big scene with their body in the corners. This could be to show the lack of future they think they hold, as well as the misery they are in. They are wanting to break out of this open space through their shadows in the background expressing how they feel. This commercial did not really have a turning point and left you feeling very dull. Everything was to create an emotion in you that would make you want to feel the need to go out and do something.

However, as the film may have been empty, some viewers may have looked at that as a way of dull, uneventful filming, that had no theme.  Viewers could potentially be bored because there is little to nothing going on.  This can be argued because there is a lot of events going on, they are little details, but loud when really looking at the scenes.

Ethos, Pathos, or Logos?

In this specific commercial they show a lot of persuasion in pathos. They are using a depressing song, and animals who have suffered from abuse in some form to persuade us viewers to donate money for the animals. They say that you could potentially be giving one of these animals a “second chance.” This is not a bad thing to go about persuasion this way for the fact that it really does touch people deeply, and make them want to make a difference. If this is how they want to advertise then they should because its getting the viewers emotionally attached and working in their favor.

Dextar

When talking about the show “Dexter” you start to see, and feel a lot of emotions rising. One person in particular dealing with these emotions would be with his sister. She works at a police station, and knows the killer everyone is looking for; her brother. Is she supposed to turn him in, or ignore what he does to protect him? These are questions she is constantly having to ask herself. What would you say? What would you do?

Should Marijuana be Legalized?

Marijuana has been a major topic for many years on whether or not it should be legalized. The government has made it illegal for years now, but now are starting to say certain doses are okay. This has created arguments saying that the government is contradicting their previous statements. To minimize the havoc revolving around Marijuana, it should remain illegal because it is still a drug, creates contradicting statements with the government, and could potentially give more freedom to larger doses in the future.

Why college athletes should not be paid

Throughout the years, many colleges have had much controversy over whether or not athletes should be paid to play in college.  This deciding factor is still “no” at the moment but continues to be up in the air about whether or not athletes should get paid.  Paying athletes would just lead to loss in revenue as well as other sports on campus that are not as popular, and would also result in greed.  Therefor athletes should to not get a salary, and should not be paid for playing a sport.

Athletes argue that much of their time goes into sports, and that they never have time to work, or earn money towards their college tuition.  What most athletes do not mention is the scholarships, or other funds that they have received while playing their sport.  Most of the athletes who want to be paid are the ones who are better known, and believe they are the reason people are at the sporting events.  This statement can be true, but it does not mean they bring in all the revenue from an event.  For example, football, and basketball games are typically big money makers for a school, but it’s usually not just because of the players.  There is a lot of money that is already going into programs such as, the concessions, the gear, maintenance workers, electric, seats, plumbing and much more. Paying all the athletes would just add more to the expenses.

If a college wanted to end up paying their athletes, they would not be allowed to just pay for certain students, and certain sports.  It would not be fair to say that all the football players are allowed to receive a salary, when the swimming team cannot.  Every athlete will claim that they work just as hard as the other athlete, and whether it is true or not, it is not fair to only pay certain players.  This also leads in to say that what if they did pay the players and the athletic program had a bad year. This may lead to loss of ticket sales, and television deals/contracts. The program would still have to pay the players and possibly result in money loss.

Furthermore it is a known fact everybody has some sort of greed to their needs.  If colleges ended up handing out money to their players, it would soon result in wanting more.  If one decided to give an athlete say 2,500 a year, it would probably not even come close to what their ideal wants are.  Athletes are already treated as celebrities around campus, and just giving in to even more of their wants will just lead to collision, and madness. People always want more, and we would eventually have to give them what they wanted just to find balance and cooperation.

In conclusion, athletes should just not be paid for doing something that they signed up for.  Thus leads to saving money, keeping respect, and maintaining a healthy relationship between athletes, and others as well.  Colleges have not legally paid college students before, and have been just fine, so why do we feel the need to change something that has worked well for many years?
