OAG Releases FlightTimes App

PRNewswire posted this release from OAG about its new smartphone app FlightTimes.

The app allows iPhone, BlackBerry and Android users to track flights from over 1000 airlines and 4000 airports.

This press release is not newsworthy because even though it is a breakthrough app that allows users to search any flight in the world, not everyone can or will use it.

It was decently written, but the quote and punctuation were not right.  The quote might be typed incorrectly, but if it isn’t, it should have been paraphrased to avoid the missing word.  Also there is a space between the ending punctionation and the quotation mark when there should not be.

How (Not) to Get Bumped

Photo from: travelerfolio.com

An article by the New York Times gave some tips on how to avoid getting bumped.

In order to ensure a full flight, airlines intentionally overbook flights.  The article said,

“Last year, out of 595 million passengers, about 681,100 were denied seats on planes, according to the Department of Transportation. Most of those people volunteered to give up their seats in return for some form of compensation, like a voucher for a free flight. But D.O.T. statistics also show that about 1.09 of every 10,000 passengers was bumped involuntarily.”

Ben Schlappig, a 20-year-old senior at the University of Florida, has a different approach.  He purposely tries to book oversold flights in hopes of being bumped.  He said in the past three years, he has gained “well over $10,000” in flight vouchers.

He gave the New York Times his tips on how to get bumped, as well as advice on how to avoid getting bumped.

Schlappig’s rules are:

  • Be the first in line
  • Fly through hubs
  • Take the red-eye
  • Choose the right airline and the right day
  • Check the weather
  • Know the rules
  • Ask for more
  • Be nice

BGSU Students’ Destination Opinions

When BGSU students were asked were they would like to travel if money were no concern, a variety of answers were given.

European countries were frequently mentioned.

Chemistry major Rosalyn Washam, 19, from Salem, Ohio, said, “I’ve been to Europe before and would really like to visit Greece.”  There is no particular thing she would like to see or do while there, just visit and sight-see.

Middle childhood education major Denise Knippen, 20, from Delphos, Ohio, has also previously visited Europe.  She’s been to France, but would like to visit Italy.  Knippen wants to go to Italy, because she likes the language, pasta, and the history Italy has compared to a younger U.S.

Two students said they would have liked to visit Japan.

Erique Geiger, a 20-year-old sports management major, of Dayton, Ohio, said he wants to visit Japan because he has family there.  He’s never traveled outside of the United States before.

An 18-year-old music education major, Steven Finelli, from Toledo, Ohio, said he would have liked to visit Japan before the tsunami and earthquake, but would much rather visit Ireland now.  Finelli’s ancestors are from Ireland.  His immediate family is still strongly Celtic-Pagan and he would like to see the authentic Irish culture.

European and Asian travel was mentioned numerous times as the “ideal travel destination.” However, one student, a dance and math double major Tim Barker, 20, from Dayton, Ohio, wants to travel to South America because it is “close but not too close.”  He specifically wants to visit the Rio de Janeiro and see how beautiful the continent is.

What’s your dream destination?

17-month-old Shut in Overhead Compartment on Flight

In an article by the Herald Sun, Natalie Williamson tells how her 17-month-old son, Riley, was shut in an overhead compartment by a Virgin Blue flight attendant.

Natalie Williamson and her son, Riley.

Virgin claims, “Ms Williamson’s husband was playing a peek-a-boo game with Riley involving the overhead compartment when the flight attendant joined in.”

The flight attendant picked up Riley, placed him in the compartment, and then closed it.

A devastated Williamson said Riley was “locked in the compartment for up to 10 seconds in complete darkness.”

She also said that Riley now suffers from anxiety and withdrawal and has seen several specialists.

Virgin apologized for the situation and has fired the flight attendant.  They also gave Williamson three passes for free flights.

“The safety of our guests is our top priority and we do not tolerate any breaches of this,” a spokeswoman for Virgin said.

Cruise Line Bargins

An article recently published by the New York Times offers different ways to find bargins on cruise line prices.

The article says to get the best deals, travelers must act quickly because many lines have seasonal promotions ending soon.  The author, Michelle Higgins, says “in general, the cheapest rates for a given sailing tend to be at the very beginning or end of a cruising season.”

Another way to save some money is to look into cruising aboard an older ship.  Because newer ships have higher prices, consider sailing on a ship that is one generation older.  As far as amenities, there is not a lot of difference between a last generation ship and a newer ship within every cruise line because lines are constantly upgrading to have the “latest and greatest.”

A third tip to a less expensive trip is to book through an agent.  Higgins says, “Cruise lines still rely on outside travel sellers. In some cases they offer special promotions through agencies. In others, the agencies buy up blocks of rooms in advance to secure the best rates for their clients.”  If your agent does one or both of those, you could save some money.

The last bargin finding advice is to “go upscale.”  This may seem odd, but “luxury cruise rates fell the most amid the recession. Though prices are recovering, their steep drop means that they have farther to go to catch up.”  Because the luxury rates cost the most, there are larger savings deals available.

Gas Prices on the Rise

An article posted on Feb. 7 by CNN explained that gas prices are slowly rising, following crude oil prices.  According to Trilby Lundberg, publisher of the Lundberg Survey, this is because demand is “still weak and a glut of refined fuel on the market, the prices at the pump are closely tracking the price of the crude oil that is gasoline’s major component.”  The national average is now $3.13 per gallon for self-serve regular.  San Francisco currently holds the national high at $3.41  per gallon with Memphis, Tenn. being the lowest at $2.90.

Egyptian Tourism: “The Damage is Done”

With all of the governmental chaos Egypt is currently experiencing, hotel proprietors are feeling the impact on the tourism industry.

Egyptian Sunset

An article by USA Today
states that just one week into the chaos, the industry is already “37% below the comparable period one year ago.”  The hotel proprietors are well aware that tourists will be re-considering their trips to Egypt and the surrounding areas.  Christopher Hartley,  CEO of the Global Hotel, akowledges “even if Egypt stabilizes quickly, the damage is done.”  In the article, Hartley goes on to say:

“Even if Egypt’s politics stabilize quickly, the mass uprising against strongman Hosni Mubarak flashed across front pages and TV news worldwide for days “will have a ripple affect on people’s perceptions” of the entire region.”

Egyptian proprietors are worried that this ripple affect will keep prospective tourists from experiencing all that the Middle East-Africa’s tourism industry has to offer.

Europe Tourism Discounts

A recent article by the New York Times, informed readers of some phenomenal travel and attraction deals in Europe.  “Europe’s Economic Trouble Offer Opportunities to Tourists,” published on Jan. 29, listed some of the best travel, hotel, and tourist attraction deals in Ireland, Portugal, and Greece.  The article also explained why some of these deals are being offered.  The article states, “Some of the best bargains can be found in the hardest-hit countries,” due to rough economic times for Europe.

Ireland's Hills

Because of the year-old troubled times in Europe, cuts have been made in many aspects such as air travel and public transportation.  This, along with recession, has slowed tourism rates for much of Europe, which is why travel is offered at lower rates in hopes of bringing in more tourists and boosting the economy.

However, because of the cut-backs in transportation, among other things, travelers should expect some delays.  Do not fret though because the article says,

“Travelers who are aware of the possibility of disruptions and have the flexibility to deal with them, will find a wide range of enticing deals.”

I think this article is newsworthy for many reasons.  Firstly, it is recent.  Secondly, it has the possibility of effecting many people all across the world.  It has psychological proximity, as Americans are also feeling the hard economic times.  Lastly, I think it is unique, because I had not heard any prior news of Europe’s economic troubles allowing for great money-saving deals for the travelers and tourists.
