On November 5th, 2009, we went to the BGSU Research Conference. There were many interesting posters at the conference, including a poster about peoples’ views on the sanctity of sex and a poster about online versions of ourselves, but one that really interested me was the poster titled “Tletsoo Crisis of the Navajo Nation.” The research was conducted by Mallory Sain and Billy J. Stratton. I have always been very interested in American Indian culture and was immediately drawn to this poster. The purpose of the research was to learn more about the Navajo traditions concerning uranium and the devastating effects uranium mining on the Navajo people. I thought the research was very well thought out and contained good pieces of evidence. The researchers backed up their claims with solid facts and had a long list of sources. The most interesting part was the few Navajo stories they had that showed the origin’s of the peoples’ fear of uranium. The board was attractive and very informative.

At the BGSU Research Conference on Thursday, November 5th, I walked through rows of displays trying to find one that caught my interest. After walking around for about 30 minutes, I found a display that left me confused.
This project, “Meditation and the Brain” by William Ryan Parish was well constructed, but I found gaps in the research. The poster had well-organized blocks of information. A definitions section explained the scientific terminology that was used throughout the project. The experiment was also explained, and the procedure was shown clearly by steps. While the poster was attractive and informative, I could not find any results for the project.

On Thursday November 5th, 2009, for class we attended the Bowling Green Research conference, located in the Union Ball Room. This was full of interesting research posters but one in particular caught my eye. This project was titled Stress Among Working College Students: Health Impacts and the Role of Time Management by Matthew Adams. Adams is a senior with a major in Psychology and Sociology. This project put a spotlight on the stress levels of college students, and explored the possible causes of that stress. The project takes into consideration the effects of the health of the students, and show the relationship between health issues and stress levels. Unfortunately, Adams felt that the results observed were inconclusive due to the fact that his sample group was too small too obtain clear results. This is disappointing to me and I hope that he takes steps to obtain reliable results and publishes his findings.

Attending the Research conference on November 5th, 2009 was an eye opening expirence that left me wondering about this world that we live in today. Every research project was interesting and they were all diverse in their topics. Anything that you could imagine studying was present at the research conference. The poster that caught my eye was the on reality shows affecting the way women view thier bodies. This interests me because the media portrays these perfect images of what they think women should look like. I used to be self concious of my body and I wished that I could look like the celebrities that were on TV, but I grew up and realized my inner and outter beauty even though I’m not a size 6. The student who did this research did an exceptionally well job, except for the organization of her work. The poster itself was attractive and full of information. I’m interested in seeing how her final reseach turns out.

On Thursday, November 5th, our class had the opportunity to see different research projects from all over campus. This event took place in the ballroom of the Student Union and I focused most of my attention on a particular poster dealing with training fish, specifically Cichlids. The poster was explained by the person who created it. He explained that there are two breeds of Cichlids that tent to travel and breed in different areas which made him wonder why this happens. He constructed a fish tank that had a red square on one side and a blue triangle on the other to find out the answer to this question. He wanted to find out if the fish preferred one shape or color than the other. In the end, he proved that his hypothesis was true and his evidence was credible because he eliminated all the variables that would change his data. It was an interesting experience as he walked me through his project and I was also very impressed by the all the research posters at this event.

Thursday, November 5th, I attended the research conference in the Union. There were many different posters, but most of them displayed some type of scientific research. Only few of the posters were not very well put together. Others were highly professional, detailed, colorful and interesting to read. The poster that caught my eye was the last poster that I saw. It was the poster that contained many different buses that had all sorts of creative designs on them. I found out it was for a collaborative project between TARTA or Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority and Bowling Green State University. Bowling Green students use poems written by Toledo students to create the designs that are placed on the buses. The poster does not go into much detail, but they list a website for more information, artintarta.org. I visited this website and there I learned more about this great program.

On Thursday November 5th, I attended the academic research conference which was held at the Bowen-Thompson Student Union, in the ballroom. The topic of research that I found myself to be considering while I was there was the display of Laura D. Webb’s study of “Historical Changes in Rivers in North West Ohio.” The display was meant to show how the sedimentation rate and growth of the flood plain of the Ottawa River has recently increased dramatically. Even so, I found this display to be unclear in exactly how this process functions. For example, the map image on the poster did not even show the Ottawa River’s location. I find that to be a crucial mistake, leaving out a visual diagram of the stated topic that actually shows how it has supposedly changed. The display also showed that apparently some of the evidence for this thesis was sand deposition, yet it didn’t clearly explain how differently the sand was depositing. And the display failed to show distances away from the river from which the samples were being taken, which simply doesn’t prove anything pertaining to the thesis. This study was inadequate.

On Thursday November 5th our class attended the Research Conference in the Union. There were so many amazing research posters in the Union along with some of our own classes posters. The most interesting poster to me however was a psychology research poster on the influence of reality television shows on women and their self view. It discussed how there are so many skinny girls on reality tv shows such as America’s Next Top Model and it can skew women’s view of themselves. They had done a study to prove this hypothesis and gotten great results. I thought this was a great poster and it spoke to me because I watch reality tv shows and I knew exactly what the researcher was talking about. I thoroughly enjoyed this poster and the research conference in general.

On November 5th I anntended the Research Conference in the union. The poster that caught my eye was about busses. Weird. But the busses all had artwork on them. Students created poems that went along with the artwork and it was competition. Whoever won got to have their poem and artwork advertised on a bus. These creators were truly amazing and talented

Today I went to the Blakey Nursing Home. It was a very different experience than I thought it would be. I expected my group to not be very good to be honest. But I was impressed at how well most people were at sight singing and harmonizing. The old people we sang to were very sweet and made me feel so happy because I was doing a service for them. I felt so sorry for them having to spend the rest of their lives in a caring facility and not being able to take care of themselves. They were mostly in wheelchairs and some need help walking. But not singing! Some of those elders knew every single song and as I glanced up from my music to smile at them some were singing with us and some even conducting! My caroling group did a great job and we even freestyled some songs at the end which was very much enjoyed. We even accepted requests from our esteemed audience. I loved my experience today. I made new friends and got to get to know people from class I had never even talked to. But most of all, I got to do a service for the elderly.
