On October 31, at 3:00 PM, I went to see the CMA’s Newcomer’s Show, “Noobies,” in Bryan Recital Hall. The show took a number of Italian art songs or arias and some musical theater pieces and put them all into one show. It was more of a concert than a musical or opera, but it was extremely entertaining. The cast was great and kept my attention the whole time. The show moved quickly so there was never a dull moment. My favorite performance was Kirsten Crockett’s performance of “The Alto’s Lament.” I had previously heard the song on YouTube but thought Kirsten really performed the piece well: I could tell she put a lot of heart into her acting and I really believed that she felt what she was singing. I also enjoyed the cast’s take on “Taylor, the Latte Boy,” which was followed by an unexpectedly funny performance of “Empty Chairs and Empty Tables” from Les Miserables. I am glad I got the chance to see the show because it was definitely worth the time.

At 8pm on November 12, 2009, the Jazz Lab Band II walked on to Kobacker Stage dressed in all black. They began with a mildly upbeat tune entitled “A Warm Breeze.” After every two or three songs Jeff Halsey, the director, would explain why the tunes were selected and explain the next one. Sammy Nestico was the composer the first two selections. Jeff Halsey explained that their theme for the concert was Sammy Nestico songs.
My favorite song of the night was “The Cool,” which was composed by Jonathan Torrence who is a student at Bowling Green State University. “The Cool,” was written for a small ensemble that included: a rhythm section, two trumpets, and a tenor saxophone.
Although the concert was composed of mostly slower tunes, the hour that passed felt as if it were only 30 minutes because the music was of a high quality and enjoyable.

On October 30th at 8 pm the Noobies show was performed in Byran Recital Hall. This show featured the newcomer vocal majors and Jane Shoemaker as the director and Sara Young as the couch and accompanist. The show started off with everyone singing together than each performer had a solo throughout, than it ended with everyone singing together again. They took many popular pieces and made their own words to them. About half of the performance was an Italian Opera and even though I could understand the words they were saying, I could still follow what was happening because of the great acting. They also took songs from musicals like My Fair Lady and Carousel.
My favorite song was The Alto’s Lament and that was about how the soprano gets to have the melody and the alto has to sing the harmony. The soloist for it was Kirsten Crockett and she did a great job singing as well as acting the part.
I liked the whole show because it was funny and very well prepared and performed. Nobody looked nervous and looked like they were all having a lot of fun. I think this performance was a great way to start off their college experience here at BG.

On December 1, 2009 I attended a concert in Bryan Recital Hall entitled “Newd Narcissism.” My previous experiences with 20th century music left me very skeptical about attending this, because I don’t really care much for that kind of music. Through the beginning of the performance I was pleasantly surprised with how entertained I was. The story of Narcissus was funny and entertaining, but once the video and the actual music started I lost almost all interest in the performance. There were still entertaining musical points, like when James Fusik played two instruments at the same time. Overall this concert is not one that I would sit through again, but for the time I was entertained.

On December 5th I attended Tammie Bradley’s Master’s Recital. She had flown back from Houston, to perform her recital. This was one of my favorite recitals I attended all semester. I enjoyed this one the most because Bradley has a pure joy for singing which is evident with every sound that comes out of her mouth as she performs. She has a very clear beautiful tone. My absolute favorite piece that she performed, which is hard to chose because so many of them were amazing, was He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands. Bradley performed this song almost to perfection. By the end of the piece her passion exploded as she sang, “He’s got you and me in His Hands” and it was the most beautiful, passionate piece in the whole recital. It gave me goose bumbs. Overall this is a concert that I would see over and over again because it was amazing and I enjoyed it immensely.

I attended world percussion night. It was absolutely awesome. The second group was good and all, but I was all caught up in watching the dancers. They were so graceful and skilled. I was in awe watching them putting so much emotion and passion into their dancing. You could truly tell they loved it. The last group, the Taika drums, was my favorite. It was almost intimidating. They were so fierce. They pounded on the drums with force and passion. The booming of the drums was over whelming. It sounded so cool. I will never forget those drums.
