Today, on November 5, we took a trip down to the Union to look at the research posters that were at the research conference. There were many interesting posters, including the ones from our class. After looking around I found one that I could relate to. It was a poster on stress and what causes it. College comes with a lot of stress because of how things change so fast. This poster was all about stress and what causes it like: work overload, positions you have to take, and some others. It also talk about using time management and how it can help you take away some of the stress. The poster had a list of heath issues that come with stress too like: stuttering, lack of sleep, and many more. Time management, though, seemed to be the key to keeping yourself together and avoiding the stress. I thought this poster was good for me because I had been having trouble with stress and college in general. After talking to some people, though, I found that if I could be more organized with my time I could overcome the stress. That’s why I think this poster attracted me, and it was worth getting put into the research conference

On Thursday November 5th, Dr. Natvig’s University Seminar class went to the research conference at the student union. The posters displayed were all interesting and unique. The poster that stuck out to me the most was Clarissa Francis’ poster about African American women and why they straighten their hair. Francis uses the hypothesis that hair straightening has continued among African American women because of its origins in slavery and the cycle it has created. When I first read this poster, I had doubts about how she could prove this, but her evidence was more than satisfactory. She gave specific dates and showed how African American hair styles have changed from era to era, she quoted well known historical figures like Malcolm X, and she even put sources for further research on the poster. African American hair trends have shown more straightening in times of oppression. Before this poster, I was not aware that this was an issue. Francis did a great job of bringing forth the issue and supporting it with excellent evidence.

On Thursday, November 5th, our class went to the research conference at the student union. I was impressed by all the different ideas and projects that were displayed. One that caught my eye was called “This is a Female Athlete.” It was a project that is meant to find what girls want to see when they look at their role model women athletes. For the research project, they chose a group of girls and took individual pictures of them. The girls chose what clothes they would wear and where they would be. Then they chose their favorite picture. They were then interviewed about why they like this picture. Next, the researchers, asked younger girls what they thought of the pictures, which ones were their favorites. The favorites were the ones with the ladies about to take action, not so much the girl wearing the dress, holding a basketball. This project is meant to take the sex appeal out of female athletes and show them as real people. The fact that the younger girls preferred the ones who were ready to play, shows what they look up to. I don’t think it’s something people give much thought. It was very interesting to learn about.

The Bowling Green State University research conference that took place on November 5th was an interesting experience. Besides a few posters not dealing with science related topics, I had no idea what any of the posters were talking about. The one project that I found interesting was the one regarding blogging while traveling abroad. Britni Pwyear created the research project and it was titled Students: Cultural Experience While Blogging Abroad. As the title implies, the project was about how blogging shows exactly how a student transforms while in a different country. She said that blogging shows exactly how the student felt every day on the trip and how he or she changed while in the country. The poster was written very well and it was easy to understand. Pwyear had three blog examples, and used the students’ opinions with her research to prove her point.

The research poster that I found rather interesting at the research fair on Thursday Nov. 5th, 2009, was titled How do reality TV Shows Affect Young Women’s Body Issues. The researcher who put together the poster was a woman by the name of Jessica E. Vazquez, who is majoring in Psychology. The purpose of her research was to determine if reality TV shows where super skinny women are present, have more of a negative effect on women than non-reality TV shows. Vazquez had a clear outline of the process that she would use to test her hypothesis. Her method began with selecting an assortment of female students ranging in age from 18-22. She would then put them in three different conditions. The participants were asked to watch a reality TV show, a non-reality TV show and for a control they were not shown a clip of any show. After each show they were asked to complete a survey about body image. They were also asked how often they had watched the shows from which the clips for the experiment were pulled. Vazquez found that her hypothesis was correct and that women’s overall self esteem after watching reality TV shows dropped. I find her research to be somewhat credible because there have been similar studies done on women about self-esteem. I believe that her research could have been better executed with more conditions and with the use of more participants. Vazquez’s sample size consisted of fourteen women and she was expecting a sample of over 150 women.

On November the 5th I was at the research conference looking at different research posters. While looking through them I came across one that intrigued me. The project was on long period variable stars. These stars, according to the gentlemen who where there that day, are thought to have varying stages of going in and out, which refers to the light of the star. And when they had gone over the basics of what the project was in detail I had gotten an understanding of what there project was. Their main objective was to find more variable stars in the Globular cluster. After there one hundred day experiment they were able to find new variable stars in the cluster there for proving that yes there are more variable stars out there being formed.

    2009 Research Confrence

The 2009 Research Conference was very interesting because of the diversity of the research posters. The poster that struck my interest the most was called Roots. This poster was a creation of Michelle Lawrence a student in College of Arts and Sciences and is a senior majoring in art. Roots really stood out to me because the creator Michelle Lawrence used her poster to exhibit they way she feels about her painting, and she feels the same way about her painting as I do about my music. She believes that simple figures can be some of the most beautiful and interesting art. I feel almost exactly the same way about my music; I believe music does not need to be complicated to be interesting, to me simplistic music is some of my favorite music. That kind of music is my favorite because I do not have to think about it I can just enjoy it; I do not feel like I have to analyze it. I I absolutely loved that I found this poster which spoke to me on such a deep level.
