College Intern Position at Ohio Department of Transportation

The Ohio Department of Transportation’s District 2 office located in Bowling Green is seeking a public relations intern.

The intern will be very involved in responding to the department’s social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.  In addition, the intern will be updating the departmental websites such as Buckeye Traffic and OHGO, working on the newsletter and news releases, media advisories and traffic alerts, plus presentations using PowerPoint.  On occasion, there will be special events that the intern will help to organize and design the program for the event. Intern applicants must have experience with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

This is a great opportunity for a junior level student to build a great portfolio. The internship begins in May 2014 for a full year and is 40 hours/week in the summer and works around the student’s schedule during the school year.

Internship with U.S. Army Cadet Command

Journalism (broadcast and print), public relations and social media students can apply for an internship in our Cadet Summer Training Public Affairs Office.

The internship is at Fort Knox, Ky., and will be conducted from May 14 to Aug. 14. It is open only to students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors during the 2014-15 school year. Deadline for applications is Feb. 21, 2014.

The Public Affairs Office operates a daily website and produces stories, photos, multimedia shows and news releases in support of the course that is focused on cadets in the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, more commonly known as ROTC.

Interns are paid approximately $270 a week (tax-free) and given free housing in a local hotel. Of course, they’ll also receive a wealth of experience.

Internships are for about 12 weeks.

BGSU Frazier Reams Public Affairs Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded through the College of Arts and Sciences.

Criteria:

  • Rising senior in Arts & Sciences intending to pursue careers in the public sector
  • Must be studying in areas of public administration, government communications, journalism or broadcasting, political science, public health administration, community service or pre-law
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2

Student must submit a 500-1000 word essay describing your career aspirations in the public sector and how your BGSU education will assist you in achieving those goals.

The application for this scholarship is the same as the general application for all of the college scholarships and is accessible online on the College’s Student Resources Web page under the “Scholarships” section.  Students can also link to the online application directly.

Central Ohio SPJ Pro Chapter Scholarship

We are now seeking nominations for the annual award named in memory of James W. Faulkner (1864-1923), the Statehouse correspondent for The Cincinnati Enquirer, the founder of the Ohio Legislative Correspondents Association and the dean of political writers during his lifetime.

In 2014, the Central Ohio Pro Chapter of SPJ will award up to two scholarships in Faulkner’s name. Candidates for the scholarships must be journalism students who will use the money to help pay for their education at an Ohio college. The funds are paid directly to the college by The Columbus Foundation. Thus, graduating seniors are not eligible.

Preference is given to candidates interested in public affairs journalism as Faulkner practiced. Candidates need not be members of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Students need to be nominated. A faculty member must write a letter of recommendation with your rationale for why the student is qualified for this specific scholarship.  Please enclose one or two examples of the student’s work.  The Central

We would like to have all nominations returned no later than Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 so that the board of directors can vote on scholarship recipients at our Feb.10, 2014 meeting.

Winners will be invited to accept the award as our guest at our annual Founders’ Day banquet, scheduled for the evening of Friday, April 4, 2014. The event is a month earlier this year as we will be combining it with the spring Regional Conference that the Central Ohio SPJ Chapter is hosting.

BGSU Saddlemire Scholarship

$1,200 Scholarship

Criteria:

  • The recipient must be of sophomore standing.
  • The recipient must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • The scholarship will recognize students who have achieved academically and have also contributed to the quality of campus life through participation and leadership in out-of-classroom activities and service projects.

Financial need is not a consideration
The award is not renewable.

Center of Innovative Food Technology Hiring Summer Intern

The marketing and communications department at the Center for Innovative Food Technology  will hire one interested student for an internship during the summer 2014 (May through August/September) term.

CIFT, based in Toledo, Ohio, is a developer and provider of technical innovations and solutions for the food processing, agribusiness and agricultural sectors of the economy in our region, our state and beyond.  These innovations and solutions are developed in order to enhance the economic performance of the food processing and agricultural sectors.

The following areas will be some of the responsibilities of the intern:

  • Write/edit content for printed materials including flyers, newsletters, brochures, advertisements, speaker bios, signage, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining large online database of contacts.
  • Event planning.
  • Organize and maintain news clippings and photo file (scan newspapers, websites to clip/photocopy articles pertaining to CIFT and/or the industry in general); maintain news binders and filing system for easy access to CIFT employees; create monthly media/advertising reports.
  • Research and evaluate potential marketing opportunities for CIFT.
  • Assist in maintaining timely website content.
  • Ensuring media list remains up to date.
  • Create media kits for CIFT events.
  • Assist marketing and communications department in various projects.
  • Perform other duties as directed (greeting guests at main desk, answering phones, handling mailings, organize mail, etc.).

This position does pay an hourly rate. The program is limited to one student during the summer 2014 term.

Ohio Newspapers Foundation Scholarships

University Journalism Scholarships– 3 scholarships for $1500 each; sophomores, juniors and seniors can apply.

Ohio Newspaper Women’s Scholarship– 1 scholarship of $1500 will be awarded, with males and females eligible to apply and students must be juniors or seniors.

Harold Douthit Regional Scholarship– 1 scholarship of $1500 will be awarded, and the applicant must have graduated from a high school in one of 8 qualifying Ohio counties.

PR Internship BGSU Fine Arts Center Galleries

The Fine Arts Center Galleries are seeking public relations interns for spring and summer 2014 to help promote several outstanding exhibitions. These are volunteer positions with a good opportunity for diverse experiences in public relations, marketing and event planning. Responses to this experience from previous interns have been very positive, and some of our past interns have gone on to positions with museums and art centers.

Public Relations Interns are responsible for working with the Gallery Director and the Galleries team to compose and publish/distribute timely marketing/public relations material about the exhibitions. This includes news releases, public service announcements, facebook and web updates, maintaining the online Gallery calendar and updating files of Gallery activities. Writing ability, creative thinking and initiative are key, while basic computer and record keeping skills are also required.

These are flexible positions in terms of scheduling, and have the benefit of being on campus. They may receive 1-3 hours of credit, under the supervision of an SMC faculty member.  Interested students may contact the Gallery Director at jnathan@bgsu.edu.
