Central Ohio SPJ Pro Chapter Scholarship

We are now seeking nominations for the annual award named in memory of James W. Faulkner (1864-1923), the Statehouse correspondent for The Cincinnati Enquirer, the founder of the Ohio Legislative Correspondents Association and the dean of political writers during his lifetime.

In 2014, the Central Ohio Pro Chapter of SPJ will award up to two scholarships in Faulkner’s name. Candidates for the scholarships must be journalism students who will use the money to help pay for their education at an Ohio college. The funds are paid directly to the college by The Columbus Foundation. Thus, graduating seniors are not eligible.

Preference is given to candidates interested in public affairs journalism as Faulkner practiced. Candidates need not be members of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Students need to be nominated. A faculty member must write a letter of recommendation with your rationale for why the student is qualified for this specific scholarship.  Please enclose one or two examples of the student’s work.  The Central

Please note that the nomination deadline is earlier this year due to a change in the timing of the chapter’s annual awards banquet. We would like to have all nominations returned no later than Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 so that the board of directors can vote on scholarship recipients at our Feb.10, 2014 meeting.

Winners will be invited to accept the award as our guest at our annual Founders’ Day banquet, scheduled for the evening of Friday, April 4, 2014. The event is a month earlier this year as we will be combining it with the spring Regional Conference that the Central Ohio SPJ Chapter is hosting.

Please submit your nomination to me, no later than Feb. 7, 2014, at the email address below.
