Literacy Development

I think this quote simply illustrates a concept in which I’ve always thought to be fascinating. I think literacy development has always been a cycle. Take for instance what’s going on right now in the world with people’s literacy. I believe most people are becoming very computer literate and alot more of our thoughts and expressions are communicated via technology rather than through books, writing, and even talking. This didn’t just happen, but it sprang from our existing literacy. I read an article the other day that was about OSU’s medical school picking up the practice of teaching via ipods. Endeavors like this is what’s changing or “developing” a new literacy.
I agree with you in that literacy development is a cycle. It takes time to for people to learn new technology and to also accept new technology.

Great point, Jordian! I think it’s very easy to jump to the conclusion that the changes to literacy are drastic and new and ignore the fact that changes to literacy have happened for many years. The cyclical nature of literacy is true. If you remember, earlier this semester we read about some ancient Greeks believing that writing would end memory/corrupt memory and good speech. There is definitely a fear that technology is corrupting literacy practices today, but I wonder if rather than corruption it is just changing our understanding.
