Summary: Margaret MacNeil likes being an outcast, swearing like a man, shocking people, making it clear she isn’t about to become a coal-miner’s wife. Margaret falls in love with Neil Currie, who promises to stay out of the mines, but when he loses his job, the mines are the only alternative. When tragedy finally strikes, Margaret surprises the town with a strange act of defiance.
