It concerns the Christian story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. As stated in Book I, Milton’s purpose is to “justify the ways of God to men” and reflects his personal despair at the failure of the Revolution, yet affirms an ultimate optimism in human potential.
