Chapters: Murder by television (1935, ca. 54 min.) — Bela Lugosi stars in this whodunit about a murdered professor who had recently completed a new invention: the television. Lugosi plays rival professor Dr. Perry, who is one among a long list of killer suspects. Perry appears to be guilty until he’s found stabbed to death…but is he really dead or is it just a ruse to throw authorities off course?
Sherlock Holmes in Terror by night (1946, ca. 59 min.) — On board a speeding train heading to Edinburgh from London is the interminable Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) and sidekick Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce). Their mission this time around is to protect a priceless diamond from falling into Colonel Moran’s (Alan Mowbray) evil clutches. A master of disguise, Moran could be nearly any one of the train’s passengers. As bodies pile up, the countdown begins for Holmes to unmask Moran before he can get his hands on the object in question.
State Department file 649 (1949, ca. 85 min.) — State Department–File 649 is a nail-biting thriller about a U.S. Foreign Service agent (William Lundigan) stationed in North China who becomes trapped in an isolated village by scheming warmonger Yun Usu (Richard Loo). Usu’s plan is to aid whichever side will pay him the most. Allying himself with Communist China, Usu threatens to execute the American citizens he is holding captive. The clock is ticking as the American operative struggles to get a message to U.S. government authorities.
Sherlock Holmes in A study in scarlet (1933, ca. 58 min.) — The ever-shrewd Sherlock Holmes (Reginald Owen) is recruited to uncover the motive behind a number of mysterious deaths. Every one of the victims belonged to a secret London club headed up by lawyer Thaddeus Merrydew (Alan Dinehart), who appropriates the deceased’s assets and doles them out among surviving society members. Although Merrydew is highly suspect, there are plenty of other suspicious characters that make the case a tricky one to solve. Coded messages and calling-card clues keep Holmes on his toes as he deduces his way to the truth.
