“Meet Your Maker” with new trailer

Fresh on the web is the official one-sheet poster and trailer for a new slasher flick from Screen Media Films that is set to make its DVD debut on April 12.

The film is called The Mask Maker and it was shot by actor/director Griff Furst (Lake Placid 3).

Horrorbid is calling the movie an “old school indie throwback” that is “inspired by John Carpenter” and I actually think I agree. I finished watching the trailer just minutes ago and I definitely saw some striking similarities between the style that Carpenter used in a lot of his old school horror movies, especially in Halloween.

Though, my question is this: Is having your style compared to John Carpenter’s a good thing?

Answer: I’m not so sure. While I know that “imitation is the highest form of flattery,” I believe it to also be the highest form of unoriginality. Like I’ve said a million times, we are living in a world where the film industry is dominated by remakes and rip-offs and that is becoming more and more disappointing as time goes on.

The director for this film is young; he’s only around 31-years-old and it is very disappointing that this young filmmaker is already having his style compared to somebody else’s.

The next generation of filmmakers (especially in a troubled genre like horror) should be here to excite and captivate audiences with new and original content that has never been seen before (or at least not as good).

New directors should not be entering into the field with their films being compared to industry veterans. Now, maybe I’m being a little obnoxious. Maybe this wasn’t intentional on his part. The interesting thing about film is that every project is open to interpretation in every aspect.

So, what is your interpretation of this film? Is it original or is it something that you’ve seen before?

Start a conversation. Watch the trailer and tell me what you think.

May’s Fangoria Cover: Could be my Favorite Issue EVER

It’s been a while since I’ve had the time to pick up a copy of my favorite horror mag, but after seeing Fangoria’s preview of their next issue, I might just have to find time.

In the upcoming May issue of Fangoria, John Carpenter will be featured on the cover. While that alone is enough to persuade me to pick up a copy (and even get a subscription), the cover art will be accompanied by a lot of interesting material for horror fans to indulge in.

According to the magazine’s website, there will be a few pages where Carpenter talks about his film career that has spanned almost 50 years.

Also featured in the issue are:

  • Actor Rutger Hauer will discuss his newest, Grindhouse-inspired film, Hobo with a Shotgun.
  • A preview of the upcoming vampire thriller Priest.
  • Part Two in the magazine’s report on German Underground Horror
  • An on-set story on the film Madison County
  • An interesting looking report on the Living Dead Doll phenomenon
  • Interview with The Shining‘s Shelley Duvall
  • and much, much more…

I hope you’re as excited for this as I am. It is not often that horror fans get the pleasure of seeing an in-depth interview with Carpenter and as a fan of the man, I’m counting down the days.

I’m going to make a point to pick a copy up. You should too.

“Scream 4” Countdown: Could this be the Bloodiest One??

Ghostface is working harder these days. He's coming home with his work still on him.

It has become no secret that Wes Craven is a fan of pouring blood and gore into his films. But, there have been a couple of new Scream 4 pics that have even surprised me.

The basis for the first three films in the series was all about rules. What are the rules for surviving a horror movie and how do those rules change with the sequels?

The first film broke ground, establishing itself as a fresh and exciting horror movie that reinvigorated the genre. It combined all elements of terror and suspense with tons of blood. But, it did it in a way that didn’t seem like it was trying to be TOO gory. And, if I must say, it did it well.

I mean, who doesn’t remember the classic Drew Barrymore death scene?

It was perhaps the most epic and brutal opening to any horror film in history. It was fresh and unique and man, was it BLOODY!

Though, that was really the only scene in the film I could find that really showed a lot of the blood and guts normally associated with modern day slasher flicks.

However, as the sequels came, the rules changed (Just as Jamie Kennedy predicted they would); and with those new rules, came more violence, more carnage and more victims.

Now, the tag-line for Scream 4 reads: New Decade, New Rules. And that looks to be just what Wes Craven and his team are doing. Instead of using the John Carpenter-type method of terror and suspense, the filmmaker seems to be focusing on the more modern, Saw-type approach. And it is already shaping up to be the most violent, gory film in the series. Just look at one of the newest pictures released by Dimension Films.

Could this be what the whole movie is going to look like?

All I know is, I'd hate to be the guy cleaning that up.
