Minneapolis Star Tribune Seeks 2015 Summer Interns

The Star Tribune newsroom offers one of the best summer internship programs available in our industry. We select at least 10 candidates for paid 10-week internships each summer. The program targets college and graduate students interested in pursuing careers as reporters, copy editors/multiplatform editors, designers, photographers and multimedia producers.

  • Interns are paid the same as a first-year professional, which is $706 a week for the summer of 2015.
  • This opportunity allows students to get real-world experience in a major daily news environment. It can also help with future employment prospects. Over the years, we have hired several of our summer interns into professional-level jobs.
  • Our interns are assigned mentors, in addition to supervisors.
  • Senior writers and editors hold weekly brownbag lunches to speak with interns about building key skills.
Most successful applicants have:

  • completed their junior year in college
  • worked for a college news outlet AND interned with at least one other professional daily news organization.

We’re looking for budding journalists who’ve demonstrated they’re ready to make the most of this opportunity. While we would never say never, the odds of your landing one of our internship spots are not very good if you’ve never interned at a professional newspaper, news magazine or website. (Note: We tend to shy away from December grads because they typically find work by the time the summer rolls around.)

How to apply:

Your online application must be uploaded or postmarked by Nov. 1, 2014 for the 2015 Summer Internship.
Any supplemental materials, such as a CD with photos or page designs, also must be postmarked by Nov. 1. We have slightly different requirements for each craft area: reporting, copy editing/multiplatform editing, design, photography and multimedia.

You can learn more about those requirements and apply online here: www.startribunecompany.com/work-for-us

Volunteers For Public Transportation Commitee

Do you wish there were more public transit and bike lanes? Do you think fast trains are cool?

Then join Ohio PIRG’s 21st Century Transportation Action Team!

We’re looking for passionate people who believe that Ohioans deserve a safe, clean transportation system that lets us all get where we need to go. We want government to stop spending so much transportation money on new and wider highways, and instead use that money to invest in public transit, bikeways, and repairing existing roads and bridges.

Cuyahoga County continues to fuel global warming by releasing thousands of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere each year – in 2002, Cuyahoga County ranked as the fourth highest emitter of carbon emissions in the nation, with 12.1 millions of tons emitted that year alone.

Despite this, we spend too much on highways and not enough on transit, bikes and pedestrian infrastructure. The state has been on a highway-building spree where earlier this year they passed a $3 billion transportation plan that is mostly going towards highway expansion. The state’s Highway Lobby is strong and wants to cash in on those highway contracts.

These are the wrong priorities, but especially because students have been leading the decline in driving and are increasingly riding public transit and biking.

By joining the Action Team you could intern or volunteer on the campaign on campus this fall and learn how to:

  • Organize transit days of action
  • Mobilize the campus community
  • Raise the voices of Millennials’ preferences for alternative transportation options

Thanks,
Marites Velasquez

Columbus Dispatch Features Department Interns

The Columbus Dispatch is planning again to hire interns for our Features Department in 2015.  We expect to choose one intern for a 12-week winter stint and two more for 12 weeks in summer. We are flexible on the start/stop times but are looking for someone to work an eight-hour day, primarily Monday through Friday.

Features editors conduct their interviews separately from the city desk and we do our search  differently  as well.  Although the city desk might share some resumes with us, it would be  best if students applied directly to the features staff for these positions.

We’d like  students to submit a resume and clips by Oct. 24 to cdecker@dispatch.com.  We will cull through the resumes to determine qualified candidates and identify those we will interview.

More information.

Please feel free to email with questions or call 614-461-5027.

Thanks,

Cindy Decker

At Home, Travel editor

Copy Editor/Page Designer, Digital Editor / Ashland Times-Gazette

Are you a copy editor/page designer who is comfortable handling both news pages and sports pages? Do you think like a reader as you edit copy and package the days news — both in print and digital? Do you understand how digital products can effectively complement a community newspaper’s printed product? If so, you might just be the person we are seeking. While we would prefer someone with experience, we’ll consider recent graduates with a proven track record in internships and/or student publications. Previous experience handling sports pages is a significant plus. Preference will be given to applicants from Ohio or the surrounding states. The Times-Gazette is a 11,000-circulation, six-day A.M. and recently was again honored as the best newspaper of its size in Ohio. Ashland, a county seat and college town, is located in North Central Ohio, with both Cleveland and Columbus just a little more than an hour away. Send 5-6 samples of your work to Ted Daniels, Editor and General Manager, Ashland Times-Gazette, 40 E. Second St., Ashland, OH 44805 or tdaniels@times-gazette.com.
