Summary: This film gives a brief biography of John Milton (9 December 1608–8 November 1674), English poet, author, polemicist and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England, and the genesis of his best known poem, Paradise Lost. Composed by the blind Milton from 1658-1664 through dictation given to a series of aides in his employ, it was published in 1667. It concerns the Christian story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. As stated in Book I, Milton’s purpose is to “justify the ways of God to men” and reflects his personal despair at the failure of the Revolution, yet affirms an ultimate optimism in human potential.
