Summary: Two documentaries about alien and harsh environments where nature and industry collide, and the communities of people that live there. Once known as the California Riviera, the man-made Salton Sea is mistakenly portrayed by the media as an ecological disaster. Today, close-knit communities of eclectic and eccentric residents must battle biased media representations and surrounding metropolises threatening to appropriate water sources that keep the sea alive. Ghosts, a vignette from the film Working man’s death (dir. by Michael Glawogger), features the Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia and the workers who haul raw sulfur across the treacherous terrain.
