Chapters: The Beatniks (1958, 72 min.) — Eddie Crane (Tony Travis) would give anything to become a recording artist, and after he lands an agent that sees nothing but stardom in his future, it seems as if Eddie is on his way. The only thing that can prevent him from realizing his dream is the bunch of no-good beatniks he hangs out with. This fear becomes reality when Eddie’s pal murders a bartender in a bungled robbery attempt that ultimately destroys all hope of Eddie becoming a star.
Fight for the Title (1957, 25 min.) — Lightweight boxing champion Benny Leonard (George Brenlin) can’t dissuade a young boxing hopeful (Michael Landon) from throwing his life away in the ring. Later the boxers go head-to-head in a match that has fateful results when the beatings that Leonard unleashes upon the young fighter cause a head injury, making him lose touch with reality. Consequently, Benny gives up boxing and thus, a lucrative career, to join the military. After years of guilt, Benny returns home to confront the young fighter, hoping to make amends so he can finally be at peace.
I Cover the Waterfront (1933, 71 min.) — Newspaper journalist Joe Miller (Ben Lyon) has been promising his boss a major story on immigrant smuggling for years, but thus far has been unable to gather enough proof. Miller finally gets his chance when he catches Julie (Claudette Colbert), the daughter of a sea-captain that he suspects is involved in smuggling, skinny-dipping. The best way Joe can figure to extract information from Julie is to date her, but he quickly finds that she’s intensely loyal to her father. When Miller catches the seafarer red-handed, it seems that his prayers are answered. But before he can share the explosive story with his editor, Miller makes a stunning revelation: he’s in love with Julie. Torn between duty and love, what will Joe ultimately choose—his career or Julie?
Life with Father (1947, 117 min.) — A comedy-drama full of anecdotal charm, Life with Father paints a portrait of life in an 1880’s New York City household. Wall Street broker Clarence Day (William Powell) thinks he’s the king of his castle, but it’s really his wife Vinnie (Irene Dunne) who wears the pants in the family. While Mr. Day attempts to run the house like a tight ship, he’s often baffled by the fact that his wife seems to have a hand in everything he does. Moreover, her constant attempts to get him baptized are downright frustrating. Still, he won’t budge on the issue, and Mrs. Day is certain that unless he does, her husband will be spending eternity a little further south. Join the Days in this heartwarming slice-of-life film that is sometimes poignant, often humorous—always entertaining and features Elizabeth Taylor in one of her first starring roles!
