Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina (1948, 114 min.) — Anna Karenina (Vivien Leigh) is a Russian noblewoman who is married to a Czarist official (Ralph Richardson). Although their marriage is tolerable, Anna finds herself falling head over heels for Count Vronsky (Kieron Moore), a handsome military officer. Despite her attempts to keep Vronsky at a distance, Anna becomes tangled in a torrid affair with the dashing young man. As rumors begin to spread, Anna’s social position begins to suffer until the scandal of her affair eventually destroys her once upstanding image, and her marriage ultimately falls apart.
William Shakespeare’s As you like it (1936, 95 min.) — As You Like It is a delightful Shakespearean comedy that centers upon heroine Rosalind (Elizabeth Bergner) who falls for a handsome fellow by the name of Orlando (Laurence Olivier), who doesn’t return her affection. In an effort to get closer to him, Rosalind dresses as a boy and befriends Orlando. The pair becomes close friends, but Rosalind is still unsatisfied with the relationship. Soon things become even more confused when a shepherdess falls for the disguised Rosalind. Ensnared in a tangled web of lies, Rosalind must choose to reveal herself with the hope of capturing Orlando’s heart once and for all, or she must keep up the charade, forever remaining the platonic friend of her heart’s keeper.
