Rand Paul election timing-Free media

http://www.cnn.com/2015/04/08/politics/rand-paul-2016-missed-moment/index.html

Evidently yesterday Tuesday the 7th of April was the day for Rand Paul to enter the race for the 2016 presidency, or was it?  The media is having a field day with his annoucement, and while this article could be viewed under the definition of several different terms we have studied this semester, I have chosen to name is as an example of (free media)  The media goes on and on about things that Paul has done in the past, in essence questioning rather his time for presidential candidacy has come and gone.  However from the point of view within in the Rand Paul camp is that they are getting free media coverage for his run for the Replucican party candidate.  Rather his decisions in the past will slow his future political career or even ruin his chances are totally up to the voters to decide.   However in the mean time the media is all a buzz with his annoucement and saving his camp millions by covering in every detail his political history, which not only gives his strategists an opportunity to bring all his past issues to the forefront of the public eye but gives him a perfect chance to explain is their opinion as to why the voters are misinformed as to how he thinks and what his future intentions will be if elected, and due to the (free media) it won’t cut into his campaign budget at all.

Hi Tony. Like the old saying goes “any publicity is good publicity.” It may not always be positive but it gets your name out there and it’s free. Like you said once the interest is raised you will always have a chance to explain yourself and if your lucky being able to kick the drama can down the road a little longer to keep yourself active in the media and public’s eye. I sometimes wonder if these politicians actually like a little mini scandal now and then just to keep themselves significant in the public eye.

    Tony,
Not only is Rand Paul being ambiguous about entering the race, he is stalling until he can figure out a way to change Kentucky State policy. He currently intends to run for the Senate seat but Kentucky law prohibits him from entering both races. If he were to run for the Presidency and lost, by Kentucky law, he would automatically be forfeit from the Senate race. Since this is a state-to-state law, Rand Paul’s camp is beating their brains out trying to find a legal loop hole to change current law. This is another example of the incumbents’ ability to flex their political muscle to suit their own purposes. Time will tell if they are successful and he actually throws his name in the hat.

Tony and Andy you are absolutely correct in your statements, any press good or bad gets your name out there. Maybe his campaign team knew that things from his past would come to light so they could have it out in the open and clear the air before the real campaigning begins. We discussed in chapter 10 about the strategies and tactics that are used in different campaigns and maybe this was there way of not only getting all the garbage out of the way but also trying to work out that sticky situation with the Senator race as well. Nevertheless, either way he is communicating to the voters of both his state and the nation and hopefully it is the way he wants it to come across.
