In the commercial Mark Block speaks greatly about Herman Cain by saying he can “put the United back in the United States.” The controversy that came out of this commercial was the prolonging discussion about Block smoking a cigarette at the end. People were actually skeptical even believing that the commercial was supported by Herman Cain because he had fought colon cancer. In this commercial Cain is essentially using Block as a surrogate in his presidential campaign. A surrogate in politics is a person who speaks on behalf of the person running for election. As Block speaks highly of Herman Cain he is building up his credibility and is doing good for Cain’s campaign. However, the action of smoking at the end my confuse people on what the actual commercial is attempting to promote.

I think this is a very interesting political advertisement. I find it very weird that Herman Cain being a cancer patient would have a member on his team smoking a cigarette at the end of his commercial. I feel that cigarette smoke could be unappealing to many potential voters. However many people do smoke. I feel that maybe his campaign team did this to draw a lot of attention to Cain’s advertisement. If you think about it this got a lot of coverage on the news because of the smoking at the end and maybe that’s what they were going for.
I read the story posted below about Cain’s controversial ad, and I think that it is one of the most odd, and awkward political ad’s I have ever seen. Either way, it is paying off big time for “The Cain Train.” According to the article, the Cain campaign brought in nearly $5 million in donations in the first couple weeks of October. In regards to the smoking in the ad, Block stated that “Yes, the smoking part of that ad was controversial—and I don’t in any way condone smoking—but the message that Herman Cain is a different kind of presidential candidate is certainly resonating across the country.” One of the most important things for a political ad is exposure, and the Cain ad is getting plenty of it from the media, and its working.

This ad was, in short, bizarre. The speech in the commercial was trite and monotonous. Cain’s turn and smile towards the camera was awkward. And the puff of the cigarette was definitely unexpected. To me it almost seems like they could not think of anything good enough to put in the ad so they decided to “spice it up” by throwing in a little controversy. This may have been a good tactic in the end, because it is getting huge amounts of media attention. Honestly, many people probably would not have wasted a minute on the ad had they not first heard that it was controversial. So, as weird as it may seem, it was an effective marketing strategy.
I found this campaign ad completely odd and bizarre, after sitting here thinking to myself and watching the campaign ad over and over I cannot figure out the message that is supposed to be conveyed. It was even more odd when I learned that Cain is a survivor of colon cancer. Not only was the beginning of the ad very slow and dry but the way they emphasized the smoking made it seem as though it was done for a specific reason. In any event I think it is a bad reflection on him, a President is supposed to be the leader and by sending messages out like this it could be hurtful.
