Sweater Queen of 1944

In 1937 actress Lana Turner made heads turn in her film debut with a minor role in They Won’t Forget. People didn’t remember her name–what they remembered was the sweater she wore, giving her the nickname of the “Sweater Girl.” This became used in traditional vocabulary when other women tried to achieve the look that Turner had in her films. This required the girl to be generously proportioned and to wear a tight sweater to show off her figure. During World War II Sweater Girls were popular pin up photos in military barracks. This trend continued in a big way through the 1950s, and still continues today.
The “sweater girl” craze carried over into traditional life on campus here in BGSU. In April of 1944, the Delta Gamma Sorority held a “Sweater Swing” where former Sweater Queen of Skol, Eva Marie Saint ‘crowned’ Phyllis Naegle the new Sweater Queen of 1944.
