January 9, 2017 | Press Release | Leave a Comment
Community Invited to Free Send Off and Preview
Performers from the Caryl Crane Youth Theatre at BGSU Firelands are preparing to take the show on the road. The group has been accepted into the 2017 iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta, Ga., which is being held from January 13 – 15.
Created by New York’s iTheatrics and produced by the Junior Theater group, the iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival is the world’s largest festival for student-driven musical theater programs and a monumental weekend of theatrical fellowship. Musical theater professionals from Broadway and beyond connect directly with one of the largest live audiences of artists and arts’ supporters of tomorrow.
During the three day event, each competing group will perform a 15-minute selection of a musical for judging by a panel of distinguished theater professionals.
The 36 Caryl Crane Youth Theatre performers, ages 8 through 18, will perform a selection from their recent production of “Honk Jr.” The group is led by Director Brian Marshall.
The iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival Atlanta will unite 6,000+ students and educators from 115 educational musical theater groups representing 28 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, New Zealand, South Korea and Australia.
The Caryl Crane Youth Theatre students are inviting all community members to a preview and send off on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in the McBride Auditorium on the BGSU Firelands campus. Admission is free, they just ask that everyone donate snacks for the very long bus ride to Atlanta.
About Caryl Crane Youth Theatre
Caryl Crane Youth Theatre exists to create revolutionary theater experiences, and advance theater as a means of educating, challenging and inspiring the youth in its community. The program works to enrich its community, educate, challenge and inspire youth through theater to foster a lifelong appreciation of the arts.
The program is completely tuition free and there are no costs to participate in CCYT productions. Caryl Crane Youth Theatre also has a Teen Board that operates alongside its Board of Directors and presents several productions throughout the year with a focus on leadership and outreach advancement. The Teen Board is responsible for all the fundraising that allows CCYT to attend the Junior Theater Festival. It is the Theatre’s first time heading to the iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival.
About Honk! JR.
“Honk!” by George Stiles (composer) and Anthony Drewe (books and lyrics) was selected as the 2000 Olivier award’s “Best New Musical.” A contemporary comic adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling,” “Honk! JR.” follows the character Ugly, whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry cat, Ugly must find his way home, with only his loving mother, Ida, searching for him. Along his harrowing yet hilarious journey he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms. The musical is so inspirational in its message of acceptance and tolerance that the Ministry of Education in Israel has made it compulsory viewing for school children.

BGSU Firelands Recognizes Scholarship Recipients, Donors
October 14, 2016 | Press Release | Leave a Comment
On Friday morning, Bowling Green State University Firelands College honored some of their best and brightest during the 17th Annual Scholarship Breakfast.
Held in the Cedar Point Center on the BGSU Firelands campus, the event brings together the recipients of scholarships offered through the College and the donor organizations and individuals who financially contribute to the scholarships.
“The scholarship breakfast is a chance to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of our students and the generosity of our alumni and community,” said Dean of BGSU Firelands Andy Kurtz. “Our donors have the opportunity to see first-hand how their generosity impacts real lives, real families, and real careers. Equally important, students have the chance to meet with their benefactors and thank them for helping to fulfill their dream of earning a college degree,” he added.
A capacity crowd of more than 200 people including donors, students and their families, and representatives from the Bowling Green campus attended the event.
“Education is the foundation of success,” said BGSU alumna Judith Sommers, who was in attendance at the event. A retired teacher and school counselor with more than 40 years of experience, Sommers knows first hand the importance of education.
“Encouraging students to further their education is critical, but sometimes more direct support is needed. As an advocate, I felt I needed to ‘put the money where my mouth was,’” said Sommers. In 2011, she created the Judith A. Sommers Scholarship Fund which is designated for a full-time education major from Huron County.
During the Scholarship Breakfast, more than 130 students were recognized and they collectively were awarded nearly $165,000 in scholarships.
Students can receive scholarships based on their achievements inside or outside of the classroom or for financial need. For some students, financial need is the only thing that stands between them and their dreams of a college education.
“Although donors differ in many ways, they share one common trait – they all believe education is important,” said Kimble Arnold, a third-year student working toward a bachelor’s degree in applied health science. Arnold received the BGSU Firelands Scholarship in Memory of George Mylander, a new award created by Wighhtman-Wieber Charitable Foundation in honor of Mylander’s passing earlier this year.
“Thanks to the donors, we are able to further our education, careers, and reach goals which otherwise may not have been attainable,” said Kimble, a Monroeville resident with aspirations of becoming a doctor.
