Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Jessalyn Audra Vogt of Norwalk has received The Janell J. Graves Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,764 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship was established in 2004 by the Jan and Michele Graves family. The recipient must enroll at BGSU Firelands within one year of high school and graduate from high school in Erie, Huron, and Ottawa county. Entering freshman must have at least a 3.2 GPA and returning college students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to a freshman, but traditional age sophomores will also be considered. Recipients must be actively involved in outside activities either on campus or within the community.

Vogt is a 2016 graduate of Western Reserve High School. She was awarded the National Engaged Leader Award by Sigma Alpha Pi. She graduated with an Honor’s Diploma and an associates degree in science from BGSU Firelands through the College Credit Plus Program. She was in 4H, Equestrian Club, and volunteered at Harbor House. Vogt represented Huron County at the Ohio State Fair and volunteered her time as a reading mentor for Project More through Norwalk Maplehurst Elementary. She was inducted into Sigma Alpha Pi and Western Reserve National Honor Society.

Vogt is a freshman majoring in inclusive early chidhood education at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Christine and Brian Vogt of Norwalk.

Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Bridget Ann Moriarty of Huron has received the DeBard Family Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,188 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship was established by the Robert DeBard family. DeBard is the former dean of BGSU Firelands and a retired professor of Bowling Green State University. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student pursuing a degree in business or education, who is from Erie County. Financial need and a 3.0 GPA or better are preferred.

Moriarty is a 2014 graduate of Huron High School.

Moriarty is a sophomore majoring in inclusive early childhood education at BGSU Firelands where she is on the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of Teresa and James Moriarty of Huron.

Huron, Ohio – Taya Emily-Marie Rohrbacher of Clyde has received the James and Margaret McBride Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,144 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship was created by Margaret McBride. Although students from any discipline may receive the award, preference is given to deserving students with musical interests.

Rohrbacher is a 2016 graduate of Clyde High School. She received multiple academic awards, a Renaissance Letter Award, and the Presidential Silver Seal Award. She also received a choir letter and an academic letter. She was in Science, Spanish, and Drama clubs.

Rohrbacher is a freshman at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Leita and Chris Rohrbacher of Clyde.

Huron, Ohio – Sydney Jean Kramer of Norwalk has received the James E. Cole Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,519 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship is available to seniors from Norwalk or St. Paul high schools. High school academic achievement plus potential for scholarly success in college are primary considerations for this scholarship.

Kramer is a junior majoring in social work at BGSU Firelands where she is on the Dean’s List. She is a member of National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Ridgefield County Kids 4H Club, and the Huron County Jr. Fair Board. She was a 4H camp counselor and is currently the Huron County Fair superintendent. Kramer is currently an assistant cross country coach for St. Paul High School and Junior High.

She is the daughter of Kelly and Matthew Kramer of Norwalk.

Castalia resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Samuel William Kuns of Castalia has received the NBC Universal-Buckeye CableSystem Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. He will receive $1,139 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

This scholarship is be available to full- and part-time students who reside in Erie County and are graduates or candidates for graduation from any high school in Erie County. Need is a consideration for this award.

Kuns is a 2014 graduate of Margaretta High School where he had perfect attendance and was on the Honor Roll. He received multiple academic letters and was student of the month for Sandusky Rotary and Citizens Bank. He was a member of SADD, Chess Club, and National Honor Society.

Kuns is a Junior at BGSU Firelands and majoring in neuroscience. He is a member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars BGSU Chapter and The National Society of Leadership and Success.

BGSU Firelands to Host State-Wide Academic Conference 

Huron, OhioHuron will welcome educators from across the state next weekend as Bowling Green State University Firelands College hosts the 23rd Annual Association for University Regional Campuses of Ohio Conference.

AURCO is devoted to the professional development of faculty throughout Ohio’s twenty-four university regional campuses and their communities. Founded in 1993, AURCO provides the opportunity for members to share ideas and sustain a common professional identity based upon the shared and unique mission of offering open access to a university education as a pathway for a better life.

Festivities for the conference will begin on Friday, April 7, with more than 125 educators from all parts of Ohio converging on the Huron-based campus of BGSU.  The bulk of the conference sessions will be on Saturday, April 8 at BGSU Firelands; however, Friday night will feature a social event and Ignite presentations – high-energy, quick-paced talks on a variety of topics – at the Sawmill Creek Resort.

Highlighting the conference on Saturday will be keynote speaker Pooja K. Agarwal.  A cognitive scientist, teacher, and education consultant, Agarwal will share her research and best practices on harnessing the science of learning and transforming teaching.

Agarwal earned a doctoral degree in cognitive psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and has more than 10 years of cognitive science and retrieval practice research in educational environments.  She recently received the Rising Star Award from the Association of Psychological Science and has a broad vita of publications and presentations.

Saturday will also offer nearly 20 workshops and presentations from educators throughout the state which appeal to a variety of interests.  Topics range from “Zombie Biology: Using the Zombie Pop Culture Phenomenon to Teach Biological Concepts” to “Experiential Learning through Mystery Shopping” to “Implementing Visible Thinking Strategies in the College Classroom.”

Saturday will also feature a student Research Poster Competition which gives students the opportunity to share their research with faculty and win a book scholarship.

Weekend activities will conclude with an AURCO Business meeting later Saturday afternoon.

The BGSU Firelands AURCO Conference planning team included faculty members Karen Black, Chris Fluckinger, Rachelle Kristof Hippler (general chair), Tim Jurkovac, Tracy McGinley, Elsy Thomas, Stephanie Walls, and Alyson Wilson, and staff member Julie Hamann.

Huron, Ohio – Elizabeth C. Smith of Norwalk has received the Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,000 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Established by the Firelands College Chapter #1382 Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, this scholarship is available to students at either campus of BGSU pursuing a teaching degree. Graduates of a high school in Huron, Erie, or Ottawa counties who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours are eligible.

Smith is a 2015 graduate of St. Paul High School, Norwalk. She was the treasurer of the National Honor Society. She was the basketball team captain and received the Basketball Coaches Award. She also received a letter in basketball, softball, cross country, and academics. She was a board member for Saints Softball and United Fund Students. Smith was a member of Key Club, Student Council, Prom Committee, Make-A-Difference Day, Teens Encounter Christ, and Junior Project Leadership. She received an Ace Award and a Fireland’s Conference 1st Team All-Academic Award. She was a eucharistic minister and a team leader for Kairos and Confirmation Retreat.

She is a sophomore majoring in inclusive early childhood education at BGSU Firelands.

Hiser is a 2010 graduate of Lyceum #1 in Poltava, Ukraine.

She is a sophomore majoring in computer science at BGSU Firelands where she is on the Dean’s List and is secretary of the math club. She has received a certificate of recognition for volunteering in Woman in STEM and for Firelands 50th Anniversary Community Festival.

Recipients must major in nursing or early childhood education, maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need. Community and school involvement is also considered.

Wimmer is a 2016 graduate of Sandusky High School where she was student council president. She played volleyball, tennis, ran track, and swimming.

She is a freshman majoring in education at BGSU Firelands.

She is the daughter of Beth and Brad Wimmer of Sandusky.

Huron resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Kathryn Marie Roth of Huron has received the Mary Fenker Book Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $648 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Roth is a 2004 graduate of Perkins High School.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Sydnee Leigh Stockmaster of Norwalk has received the John F. and Doris H. Ernsthausen Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,706 towards tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Two scholarships are awarded annually to graduating seniors of either Norwalk or St. Paul High School. Academic achievement of a level promising success in college is the chief qualification. Principals of the two schools screen applications and they recommend a pool of three finalists from which the BGSU Firelands Scholarship Committee selects the ultimate recipient.

Stockmaster is a 2016 graduate of Norwalk High School.

She is a freshman at BGSU Firelands and she is majoring in accounting.

She is the daughter of Kristy and Wayne Stockmaster of Norwalk.

This endowed award is available to full-time sophomores who are graduates of Sandusky, St. Mary’s Central Catholic, Perkins, Huron, or Margaretta high schools.

Lance is a 2015 graduate of Huron High School.

She is a sophomore majoring in applied health science at BGSU Firelands where is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

She is the daughter of Mila and Sam Lance of Huron.
