Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Danielle Nicole Jones of Sandusky has received the John and Sandy Doering Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $554 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This scholarship is available to full- and part-time students from Erie, Huron, and Ottawa counties who are pursuing majors in business or sociology. A 3.0 GPA is required and financial need is considered.

Jones is a 2013 graduate of Sandusky High School.

She is a sophomore majoring in social work at BGSU Firelands where she was inducted into the Society of the Flame, was recognized through the Champions Program and is active in the Criminal Justice Club and Safe Space.

She is the daughter of Mary Beth Wade Jones of Sandusky.

Norwalk resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Kelly Ann Snay of Norwalk has received the Erie-Ottawa Mental Health Education Fund to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $2,060 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This endowed award was presented to BGSU Firelands to ensure funding into perpetuity for students pursuing mental health professions, and in memory of all those who served on the Board, as staff members, or those who used the services of the Erie-Ottawa Mental Health Center. Students from Erie and Ottawa counties who are attending at least part time and planning to pursue a degree in mental health are eligible for this award. Juniors and seniors are given primary consideration and financial need is considered as well.

Snay is a 1980 graduate of Bellevue High School.

She is a junior majoring in social work at BGSU Firelands. In her free time, she volunteers at Stein Hospice and United Way.

She is the wife of Cletus C. Snay of Norwalk.

Huron, Ohio – Ashley Rose Bond of Bellevue has received the Jim and Della May Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $502 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Jim May was a BGSU alumnus and an educator in Sandusky, Margaretta, and Medina school systems. The book scholarship, endowed by the May’s family, is available to an education major, or a student who plans to pursue another certification degree at the main campus. Full- and part-time students are considered. Highest preference is given to non-traditional students returning to school to pursue a career in public school teaching. Financial need is a primary consideration. Academic potential and service or activities is a secondary consideration.

Bond is a 2013 graduate of Seneca East High School where she received the National Machinery Citizenship Award three times. Milan resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Whitney Kay Baughman of Milan has received the BGSU Firelands Advisory Board Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $1,386 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This scholarship is used by the Director of Admission to recruit a high school student who has demonstrated a high level of academic achievement through at least six semesters of high school work. The recipient must have at least a cumulative 3.5 GPA, 25 ACT or 1050 SAT, demonstrate a history of involvement in school or community activities, enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework for each semester in which the award is in effect, and apply for formal admission to the University within two weeks after the award is offered.

Baughman is a 2015 graduate of Edison High School where she received several awards including Student of the Month, Student of the Quarter in Foreign Language, Student of the Quarter in Mathematics, and an academic pin. She earned the Speech and Debate Degree of Distinction along with honor chords for speech and debate, Spanish Honor Society, and National Honor Society. This endowed scholarship is available to graduates from Erie County or Norwalk, St. Paul, Bellevue, or Monroeville high schools. The Sandusky Knights of Columbus (Third and Fourth Degrees), Firelands Shrine Club, and Singara Grotto funded the first scholarship ever awarded at BGSU Firelands and in 2000 these organizations endowed the scholarship so that it will continue in perpetuity.

Beier is a 2013 graduate of Norwalk High School where she received many awards and honors including four academic letters, four varsity letters in soccer, three varsity letters in softball, and three varsity letters in bowling, the Good Citizenship Award, Rotary Citizenship Athlete Award, First Team All District and Award of Excellence in soccer, Tough Gal Award in soccer, OSHAA Award of Excellence, Captain’s Award in softball, and Most Valuable Player Award in bowling.

Huron, Ohio – Anthony Michael Kaiser of Port Clinton has received the Dr. Joseph F. Krauter Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. He will receive $1,046 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This endowed scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Joseph F. Krauter, a BGSU Firelands professor from 1969 to 1989. Non-traditional students with a 2.5 GPA can be considered with preference given to students who have served in the military, who are full-time students, and who reside in Erie, Huron, or Ottawa counties. Special emphasis is placed on students who are working while attending college.

Established by the Firelands College Chapter Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, this scholarship is available to students at either campus of BGSU pursuing a teaching degree in the field of education. Graduates of a high school in Huron, Erie, or Ottawa counties who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours are eligible.

Davis is a 2012 graduate of New London High School.

Sandusky resident receives scholarship to attend BGSU Firelands

Huron, Ohio – Mariah Dawn Morales of Sandusky has received the Mack Snyder Rau Memorial Scholarship to attend Bowling Green State University Firelands College. She will receive $874 towards tuition for the 2015-2016 academic year.

This endowed scholarship was given in memory of Mack Snyder Rau by Alice W. Rau, David A. Rau and Norman D. Rau. The scholarship is made available to students pursuing a bachelor of liberal studies degree who are from Erie County. Both freshman and continuing students are eligible. A “C+” average, school and community activities, and financial need are considerations for this award.

Morales is a 2011 graduate of Margaretta High School where she was on the merit list and she was active in softball, chess, and Art Club.

She is a senior majoring in liberal studies at BGSU Firelands where she has been on the Dean’s List.

She is the daughter of Jennifer Morales of Sandusky.

Huron, Ohio – Edison High School won first place honors in the 31st Annual Academic Tournament held at Bowling Green State University Firelands College on Saturday, Nov. 21.  The academic quiz teams from Amherst Marion L. Steele and Monroeville High Schools captured second and third places respectively.

The Academic Tournament is an academic quiz contest sponsored by BGSU Firelands.  Eleven teams from area high schools participated in the six round tourney.

The adviser for the Edison academic team is Shirley Wallrabenstein.  Team members include:  Nicholas Frederick, Benjamin Gastier, Jacob Grant, David Graves, Parveer Kaur, Erica Reber, Shea Smith, and Nathaniel Zettler.

According to BGSU Firelands Dean Andrew Kurtz, “The performance of these students clearly indicated that a good deal of learning is going on in area schools.  The quiz questions covered a wide range of subject matter, and required the students to draw upon problem-solving skills, in addition to having a good working knowledge of each of the ten academic disciplines from which questions were developed.  The students should be very proud of their performance.”

The winning teams each received plaques.  Also, in recognition of their first place finish, a $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a 2016 graduate of Edison High School who will attend BGSU Firelands next fall.

Huron, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Firelands College will host its annual Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math conference designed for junior high school girls.

One hundred girls in 7th and 8th grade will participate in the conference at BGSU Firelands which introduces young women to the traditionally male-dominated fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Students will engage in a variety of experiments and creative problem solving as they participate in multiple hands-on, STEM workshops. They will also discover exciting career opportunities in a fun and educational atmosphere as they interact with professional women in the respective fields.

Sponsored by the Office for Educational Outreach, the program is scheduled for Nov. 13 from 8:45 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. at BGSU Firelands.
