BGSU Firelands Faculty and Staff Honored
Huron, Ohio – The 48 Annual Recognition Program at Bowling Green State University Firelands College was held on Friday, April 14 in the Cedar Point Center on the Huron-based campus. The following awards were presented to faculty and staff members:
Links to Progress Award
This award is presented to the person or organization of the campus community that has been a significant link in the chain of growth of BGSU Firelands. This person or organization must have been instrumental in linking the college to the broader human community. The 2017 recipient is Robert Prince Obey of Toledo.
Obey is an adjunct assistant professor teaching classes in ethnic and cultural studies and has been with BGSU Firelands since 2010. He holds a doctoral degree in American cultural studies from BGSU.
According to a nominator, “Robert Obey created an Introduction to Film course which included a service-learning component. Students in his class interacted with children at the Nehemiah Center and they made a great impact. These children had never been to a college campus and Dr. Obey gave them a real taste of how accessible Firelands College is to students.”
Creative Scholar Award
This award may be given annually to any full-time BGSU Firelands faculty member for outstanding scholarly or creative accomplishments during the previous three years. The 2017 recipient is Christopher Fluckinger of Port Clinton.
Fluckinger is an instructor of psychology and has been with BGSU Firelands since 2010. He also has teaching experience at the University of Akron. Fluckinger earned a doctoral degree in organizational/instructional psychology from the University of Akron.
Fluckinger was selected for his extensive body of research and the high standards he sets within the BGSU Firelands faculty. His primary research interests are in the areas of workplace personality assessments and social behaviors related to hygiene. Throughout his short academic career, Fluckinger’s research contributions include a book, three book chapters, five peer reviewed articles, and more than 20 conference presentations.
Dean’s Special Recognition Award
This special recognition award may be given annually to individual faculty members, administrators, classified staff, or members of collaborative teams who have made exceptionally meritorious contributions in support of the mission of BGSU Firelands. Awards may be used to recognize career achievements as well as recent accomplishments. The 2017 recipient is Brian Marshall of Cleveland.
Marshall is the artistic director/business manager of the Caryl Crane Youth Theatre and has been with BGSU Firelands since 2010. He has directed more than 50 plays and musicals and performed in more than 150 including several award-winning roles. He earned a master’s degree in arts administration from the University of Akron.
Marshall was selected for his contributions to the CCYT and expanding the outreach and academic missions of the College. During his tenure with CCYT he has increased programming and enhanced both participation and general attendance at productions. Marshall was also recognized for his success at the iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival held in Atlanta in January. Marshall and the CCYT performers earned two of the highest honors awarded at the competition and several more accolades.
Distinguished Classified Award
This award is bestowed annually to a classified staff member who performs above and beyond what is required by the position, provides services to the campus community and beyond which promote growth and harmony, and/or demonstrate resourcefulness in the work place that contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the College. The 2017 recipient is Emmalou Millis of Vermilion.
Millis is the senior secretary in instructional services and has been at BGSU Firelands since 2013. Millis earned an associate of applied business from Ohio Business College and has more than 10 years of experience as an administrative professional.
According to a nominator, “Emma is one of the most dedicated employees I have ever come across. Apart from being highly efficient at her job and having a great work ethic, she goes above and beyond her job description to help faculty and staff. There is no one more deserving of this award.”
Distinguished Administrative Staff Award
This award is bestowed annually to an administrative staff member who performs above and beyond what is required by the position, provides services to the campus community and beyond which promote growth and harmony, and/or demonstrate resourcefulness in the work place that contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the University. The 2017 recipient is Valerie Glowacki of Vermilion.
Glowacki is the clinical education coordinator for radiologic technology and has been employed at BGSU Firelands since 2006. Prior to starting at the College, Glowacki worked for a variety of medical facilities in Northeastern Ohio and has nearly 30 years of experience in radiology. She earned an associate degree in applied science from Lorain County Community College, Elyria, and she is a licensed State of Ohio Radiologic Technologist. Glowacki will be retiring from BGSU Firelands this summer.
According to a nominator, “Valarie is dedicated to her students and is a great asset to the program. She is well liked by so many with her positive attitude. She truly cares about her students and their well-being. She also takes such pride in her work to ensure the success of her students.”
Distinguished Teacher Award
This award is bestowed annually to a full-time faculty member who demonstrates commitment to and exemplifies excellence in the art of teaching. Persons may be nominated by any member of the BGSU Firelands community or by college alumni. The 2017 recipient is Raymond Schuck of Milan.
Schuck is an associate professor of communication and has been with BGSU Firelands since 2012, but also taught at the Bowling Green campus beginning in 2005. He has a broad range of published articles and presentation and recently published with his father, Ray Schuck, “Do You Believe in Rock and Roll” a collection of essays focusing on the cultural and historical significance of Don McLean’s hit song “American Pie.” Schuck earned a doctoral degree in human communication from Arizona State University, Tempe.
According to a student nominator, “His unflagging efforts to develop students who are as well-read as they are compassionate is unlike any professor I have encountered in my four years. His impact on the students is immeasurable. He has made me a better person and I am supremely grateful.”
Distinguished Part-time Teacher Award
This award is bestowed annually to a part-time faculty member or administrative staff member who teaches at BGSU Firelands and demonstrates commitment to and excellence in the art of teaching. The 2017 recipient is Sharon Robinson of Milan.
Robinson is an adjunct instructor teaching physical education courses and has been with BGSU Firelands since 2004. Previously she worked for the YMCA as a gymnastic coordinator and she has experience working in physical education in area public schools. Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree in education from BGSU.
According to a student nominator, “I have taken most of Sharon’s classes because of her knowledge and the enthusiasm she brings to class. I have learned so much from her and I am encouraging others to take her classes because of the way she helps students.”
