Huron, Ohio – On Friday, May 3, Bowling Green State University Firelands College will conduct the 28th Commencement Ceremonies with keynote speaker U.S. House of Representative member Marcy Kaptur.

BGSU Firelands will recognize the 294 students who earned degrees at the campus during the 2012-2013 academic year including both bachelor and associate degrees.

“This is the culmination of a great deal of hard work and sacrifice for our students who will be graduating this evening, and we are proud that they have achieved their goals,” said BGSU Firelands Dean William Balzer.  “We are delighted to have Congresswoman Kaptur as the commencement speaker.  She is a champion of education and has been an avid supporter of BGSU Firelands and our entire community.”

Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur is the longest serving woman in the U.S. House of Representatives.  She currently serves on the powerful Appropriations Committee and she is the first Democratic woman in history to serve on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

A lifelong Ohioan, Kaptur is nationally known for her successful effort to authorize construction of a World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.  The memorial was dedicated in 2004.  She is a leader in the commitment to ensure proper care and compensation for veterans and their families and has dedicated her efforts throughout her tenure in Congress to putting America’s veterans and their families first.

Kaptur brings a solid record of caring service to the people of Northern Ohio.  Voted one of the 25 hardest working Members of Congress, she is a tireless advocate for her district, which runs along the Lake Erie coastline and includes parts of Lucas, Ottawa, Erie, Lorain, and Cuyahoga counties.  Kaptur is also a leading voice in the effort to utilize the natural resources of Ohio’s northern coast toward job development, sustainable energies, and coastal tourism.

Kaptur is author of “Women of Congress” a book published by Congressional Quarterly.

BGSU Firelands 28th Commencement Ceremonies will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, in the Cedar Point Center on the Huron campus.
