Hunger in the Snow

ABRUPT CUT

INT. CHIP’S ROCK HOUSE- DAY

Chip wakes up in his house to the sound of a long, drawn out growl.  He realizes it was from his stomach and pokes his stomach with his finger.

He rolls out of bed and sleepily drags himself over to his pantry.  He opens it up and realizes that it is empty.  Out of the corner of his eye, he espies a pile of nuts and berries on the porch that is out his door.

He moves in a sleepy jog out the door and down his rocky path.  He stumbles and falls face first into the snow that he didn’t notice.

Chip pulls himself out of the snow and assesses his surroundings finally.  He realizes that it is winter, and snow is everywhere.  He also realizes he has never seen snow and hates it!

CHIP

(eyes wide in fear and shock)

AHHHHHHHHH!

Flying through the air, Chip escapes to the rock path.  He then turns and looks sadly towards the pile of nuts and berries.  After tapping his foot and pondering his predicament, Chip gets a brilliant idea.

He runs into his house and comes out with a long, straight stick.  He backs up slightly into the house and starts to run towards the edge of the path.  Using the stick as a pole vault Chip tries to vault across the gap between him and the nuts and berries.  He falls short by a long shot and makes a silhouette in the snow.  Chip makes a long tunnel in the snow and pulls himself out on his path.

Sitting down and thinking on the path, Chip continues to look determinedly at the pile of food.  Another idea flashes into his head and he scrambles back into his house.

FADE OUT-

Phone pad tones and muffled squeaky talking ensue.

FADE IN-

OUTSIDE CHIP’S HOUSE

Chip stands outside waiting for something.  Tapping his foot impatiently, Chip checks his watch.

Sound of a plane flying over.

A wooden crate appears on screen descending slowly via an attached parachute.  It floats down and lands on the path near Chip.  Chip celebrates and is interrupted by another stomach grumble.  He pulls out a crowbar from behind him and tears into the box.

After opening the box with much vigor, Chip pulls out a rocket-pack and straps it on.  A piece of paper floats out of the box and Chip grabs it.  He looks at it and sees it is the instructions and discards it.  He grabs the handle of the rocket-pack and pushes the pushes the big red button.

CHIP

(cocky smile turns into a scared face)

AHHHHHHHHHH!

Chip streaks into the trees and then pummels to the ground in a shower of leaves and snow.

Chip drags himself out of the debris and lies down on his path. Sadness fills his eyes and he stares toward the sky.  His stomach grumbles lightly and he pokes it again.  A leaf floats down and lands on his foot.  He looks at it and looks around.  There in the debris, he sees a few more leaves and another plan fills in his head.  He collects the leaves and hurries back into his house.

A few seconds later, he exits his house and pads down the path with bundles of leaves tied to each foot.  He gets to the snow and takes one wary step.  When he doesn’t sink, he lets out a slow sigh and takes another hesitant step.  With relief plastered on his face and success in view, Chip takes off across the snow towards his goal.

In the last couple steps, Chip trips and goes flying onto the porch into the pile of food.  He leaps out of the middle holding his goal and long sought after food high above his head in triumph, and begins to chow down happily on the nuts and berries.
