Leigh Ann Wheeler to speak on Sexual Expression and the Constitution

Leigh Ann Wheeler, former ACS faculty member and current Professor of History at Binghamton University, will be coming to speak at BGSU on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014.  Her talk is titled, “‘Handmaiden of the Pornographer,’ Champion of Free Speech: The American Civil Liberties Union and Sexual Expression, 1960s-1980s.”

Monday, Sept. 15, 2014

201 Bowen-Thompson Student Union

Reception to follow

Dr. Wheeler’s scholarly work revolves around one key problem—understanding the gendered and changing nature of sexual culture in the twentieth-century United States. How Sex Became a Civil Liberty, her most recent book, shows how the American Civil Liberties Union profoundly changed the ways Americans think about, legislate, and adjudicate sexual issues such as birth control, nudism, obscenity & pornography, abortion, sterilization, gay rights, rape, and sexual harassment.
