Master’s Students’ Experiences of their Social Identities Study

We are looking to understand how master’s students at BGSU experience their social identities (i.e., disability, first-generation status, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) in the context of their graduate experiences and what, if any, patterns are evident when those experiences are compared across broad disciplinary groups. This research is being conducted as part of an Advanced Qualitative Research class, under the supervision of Dr. Ellen Broido, a professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs. What’s involved? We would conduct a face-to-face interview with you, at the time and place of your choosing, that would last one to one and a half hours and would be audio-recorded. You could opt out of the study at any time or decline to answer any questions. There would be follow ups; the first would be for you to review the transcript of your interview, removing any information you don’t want us to use and expanding on anything you said that you’d like to. We also would ask you, several weeks later, to review the preliminary findings of the study and let us know if they captured your experience. We expect that would take 10-15 minutes. If you’d like more information, or are ready to volunteer to participate, please contact Dr. Ellen Broido. You can reach her by phone at 2-9391, or by email at ebroido@bgsu.edu. Please note that email is not confidential, so if you use email, it is possible someone could learn of your involvement in this study.
