Art History—Feminists have worked to resurrect various artists from the past. Is there a way to both successfully bring back to life artists and point to the basic institutional inequalities that Nochlin and Kraft pointed us to? Module #2

I believe there is a way to both successfully resurrect female artist from the past and point to the basic institutional inequalities that Nochlin and Kraft pointed us. I believe society can accomplish the resurrection by recognizing how women fought oppression for decades. In addition society can analyze the women’s struggles and battles before reaching a basic institutional equality. In Nochlin’s article he states, “Male domination as one of a long series of social injustices that had to be overcome if a truly just social order were to be created.” In the quote he is informing his audience that men will dominate over society causing inequality among women unless there is a long period of fighting for social justice. In the past female artist were perceived to have unqualified artwork compared to a male artist. Their artwork was considered a craft and not a work of art. This was a standard principle for women artist in the past. Decades later Nochlin hypothesis about social injustices was correct with the current society but the question to be asked is whether or not equality is acknowledged within female artist. If women are accomplishing equality why can’t society resurrect female artist? I believe in order to resurrect their artwork individuals must come together and fight this inequality too. Women are only given equal opportunity when they fought for their rights. In addition women’s historical events and materials will not be held at a higher standard unless this is bought to society’s attention. Society only wants to embrace women’s accomplishments when women give them a reason to. I believe women have come far within society’s social justices but society still has a long way to go to reach full equality. Overall, women need to stand their ground and still fight for what they believe in to reach total equality.

Multicultural Activism—How do you see women in this unit “making democratic aspirations a reality?” What does that mean to you? (LaDuke xxi). Module #2

Women in this unit are “making democratic aspirations a reality” by overcoming oppression through perseverance. As I read the exert from the novel entitled, “Women’s Voices, Feminist Visions: Classic and Contemporary Readings” authors Susan M. Shaw and Janet Lee give their readers the history of Women Studies and the core reasons why these classes should be attained at various universities. As written by Shaw and Lee, “Connecting with the personal as political encourages men to potentially function as allies on a deeper, more authentic level (pg 7).” Women from past to present are formulating resourceful relationships with the opposite sex to display their talents and needs among society. Activist can be taken seriously now since society’s “superior” sex’s supports their causes. The effect of the support from the dominant sex gives women more power because both women and men are becoming supporters. Great appreciation is giving to women who are willing to reach out for help from a group whom has conquered majority of society. In addition, this is the same group who has oppressed them in the past. Women have overcome the obstacles and struggles of inequality by achieving voting rights, higher education, sexism with employment, etc. A positive example of how women’s democratic aspirations are being framed into a reality is the 2008 presidential campaign. Senator Hillary Clinton ran for the President of the United States. Even though Senator Clinton was unable to advance into final elections she became a voice for women. Historical events like this presidential race gives women the courage and opportunity to make further advances in society. Also this portrays how society is overcoming their past idealistic ways. Women activist still have a while until their aspirations are accomplished. Society still allows men to dominate over the submissive minority but it is the aggressive women who will deliver equality among the world.
