I believe there is a way to both successfully resurrect female artist from the past and point to the basic institutional inequalities that Nochlin and Kraft pointed us. I believe society can accomplish the resurrection by recognizing how women fought oppression for decades. In addition society can analyze the women’s struggles and battles before reaching a basic institutional equality. In Nochlin’s article he states, “Male domination as one of a long series of social injustices that had to be overcome if a truly just social order were to be created.” In the quote he is informing his audience that men will dominate over society causing inequality among women unless there is a long period of fighting for social justice. In the past female artist were perceived to have unqualified artwork compared to a male artist. Their artwork was considered a craft and not a work of art. This was a standard principle for women artist in the past. Decades later Nochlin hypothesis about social injustices was correct with the current society but the question to be asked is whether or not equality is acknowledged within female artist. If women are accomplishing equality why can’t society resurrect female artist? I believe in order to resurrect their artwork individuals must come together and fight this inequality too. Women are only given equal opportunity when they fought for their rights. In addition women’s historical events and materials will not be held at a higher standard unless this is bought to society’s attention. Society only wants to embrace women’s accomplishments when women give them a reason to. I believe women have come far within society’s social justices but society still has a long way to go to reach full equality. Overall, women need to stand their ground and still fight for what they believe in to reach total equality.

I like your opinions about women fighting for what they deserve and not backing down until their art work is recognized and appreciated. I feel this is exactly what the Guerrilla Girls are striving for in their work. However, I don’t exactly know how female artists are supposed to force people into seeing their artwork for what it really is. It seems that this is impossible, it seems that society as a whole needs to recognize women artists on their own terms. I think that resurrecting female artists of the past is a great starting point and is a gateway for present and future women artists to receive the credit that they deserve.
To begin with, I couldn’t agree more when you say that we in society have a very long way to go in terms of gender equality and justice. Unfortunately, this has placed issues with women being credited for past accomplishments. . Art being one of them. Furthermore, I agree when you stated that the possibility for women artists to be ‘resurrected’ and credited. . Is entirely possible. I think the ONLY way for that to occur is if we take that stance you mentioned and entirely change the minds of society. It is sad that history has placed women in this predicament. As a feminist, it bothers me that women are forced to have to take such a stance. When do we ever really see men having to do the same? Rarely. My question then is. . Will we ever reach gender equality? In my opinion. . It’s going to take a lot more than just sticking up for justice. . It’s going to take the entire change of mind in society, beginning with the youth.
I believe women can force people into seeing their artwork for what is really is because they have forced people to listen, acknowledge, and respect them in other areas. I cannot see why this would be any different. I believe women need to explain their artwork more than men because not everyone is going to be able to understand the emotional visuals of a woman’s point of view especially in artwork. I can see this taking time since we do not have equality. However, I do see women artist receiving the same recognition as men in the future.
I can understand where you are coming from but I have seen men forced to take a stance on issues. Of course they were for racial and not gender equalities but they experienced similar oppression women are facing. I can agree with you when you said “It’s going to take the entire change of mind in society, beginning with the youth.” I believe the youth are the ledaers of tomorrow and their accomplishments start with the right environment and motivation from others. I believe if we can motivate our youth about women’s equality they will be able to shape our future. The motivation can come from anywhere. For example, the media can play a strong part in women’s equality. I cannot remember the last time I did not see a half naked woman on a music video. These are the same videos my younger male cousins watch to idealize the artist. This is just one example of how as a society we are shaping the youth. Once again, I agree with you and the only way women will experience full equality starts with a huge change in society.
