Screening Analysis
For my screening analysis project, I chose to watch the film Blue Valentine, directed by Derek Cianfrance. I was able to acquire this film by watching it in the pop culture floor at the Jerome Library on campus. There were several ways in which this film related to Block’s visual concepts. Overall this film has […]
Last Reflection
This spring semester has gone by very fast. Out of all the classes I took this semester, Applied Aesthetics was my favorite. It improved my filmmaking abilities extremely and it was a great learning experience. I enjoyed all the filming assignments because I got to do whatever I wanted. We were given a lot of artistic freedom which I have never really received in any other class. My favorite assignment is the final project. Growing up I always loved watching music videos and I could see myself doing that in the future. While making my music video with Michael, my love for filmmaking was reassured. I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life and this class has brought me one step closer to my goals. Figuring out editing software was a great asset in this class because I didn’t have much knowledge of editing. My biggest struggle was animation because I have never done anything like that in my life. I found that if you take it slow and ask for help, anything is possible. I have grown as a filmmaker in this class tremendously and I cannot wait to see what is in store for myself in the next three years at BGSU.
Final Project Drafts/Status Update
My final project with Michael Fracassa is coming along great. Most of our shooting is complete. Over this past weekend, we did lots of on location shooting like at Michael’s banquette hall and the Toledo Zoo. We have completed most of the editing as well so we are seeing a sense of what our final project will look like. Some of the challenges we have come across is not having enough hands to run cameras since we are both acting. Our solution to this is that we have used tripods and a friend to help record. The subject matter is coming across very clear in our music video that the main character (Michael) is falling for myself. The fantasies show a clear representation of what his dream life would be like with myself. Our process towards completing our music video is excellent. We are staying on track and working together as a team. We made a teaser video to show a sneak peak of the kind of feel the music video will show to audiences. I also included a screen shot of the work we have completed. Overall we are almost done and will be filming our final shot on this Friday.
Project Pitch
For the final project, I will be doing a music video with Michael Fracassa. This music video with be following the typical love story and how a shy boy has fallen for an outgoing girl. This music video would fall under the romantic/comedy. This boy and girl will consist of Michael and I as actors. We will both act and film our music video. The background story to this music video is that Michael is a very single and awkward boy looking for happiness and romance. Also his family is nagging him to look more presentable and get a girlfriend. Finally Michael decides to try dig deep into his love life but fails. We will show 3 quick shots of horrible dates. This entire segment will be before the music starts to show the background to Michael’s life. Once the music starts, the audience will start to see Michael transform in his looks and confidence. The next scene is Michael sitting at the library (on campus) and he notices me (the girl). I will have a grand slow motion entrance to give it a more dramatic look. Once he notices myself, he starts daydreaming about being with this girl. These daydreams will consist of singing to her (like he is a pop star), going to the zoo together, and jumping in a pool with all their clothes on. This daydreaming makes the video more fun to make and more fun for the audience to watch. This whole video will be shot with mine and Michael’s DSLR cameras (cannons). We plan on making the video look as realistic as possible by not using many static shots. We look forward to shakey cams, extreme close ups, and lots of movement and rhythm (with video and music). Also we plan on using quick shots back and forth to different daydream scenarios so the video isn’t boring for the audience. For editing we are going to use Final Cut Pro since we both have experience and feel comfortable with that software. I am excited to work with Michael for this group project because we both collaborate well together. We both agreed on the music, video, and editing aspects for this final project which makes things less stressful and fun. We plan on this video being 4 minutes long since there will be a narrative short story in the beginning then the music video after. The major challenges for Michael and I would be being both the actors and the cinematographers. We have both been actors and filmed before for a project and it was hard at times but we learned that extra hands to help filming is a boost in making our film better. This fun loving music video will be very fun to be a part of with Michael and I am excited for our results.
The Untold Story of Jen Pack
This video represented movement and rhythm in a way that shows Jen Pack, a typical girl getting ready when everything goes wrong.
Collaboration
For my shot for shot video project, I worked with Michael Fracassa. We did the ending scene of Silver Linings Playbook. We had a lot of fun filming this because we got to act as the main roles. Since we are good friends out of class it was easy to work together. It was nice hearing his creative ideas and mashing it into mine. Working with someone else is really nice because it makes work go by much faster and there is more creativity. We both liked this project because we had a choice of what to remake and what to change about it. Collaboration is key in filmmaking if you want to be successful.
Tone
This shot is an example of a noncoincidence of tone. I used light behind my model so that it gave a silhouette which completed the tone. This hides the subject from the audience, not showing any definition in her face or body, just the outline.
This shot is an example of contrast of tone. The white toilet paper is very emphasized by the black background. It is a clear example because i used black and white objects to set the contrast of tone.
This shot is an example of Affinity of Tone. I used a colorful room with natural sunlight for my set. I thought this worked well for affinity because of the great tonal range.
Photoshop- Modern Selfie
For this project I used the famous statue in Brazil and put a modern twist. Pictures are everything in this modern world so I had this statue take a “selfie” with a polaroid camera. I used the magnetic lasso tool to get the camera separated from its original background to the image of the statue. I then adjusted where I wanted the camera to be placed and saved it as a JPEG. Using the lasso tool was easy and fun.
Linear Motif
For this activity, I chose to shoot a linear motif. There generally is a theme of lines and figures that go along with linear motif. For my picture, I chose a space that had a lot of repetition in lines, horizontally and vertically. The linear motif is clearly the lines in each step and the poles along side of it. I think this is visually pleasing for this assignment.
My belief on how films should be made
Film’s should make any person believe that this world on a screen is so unbelievably beautiful and real. Film’s should be made to show a small idea as a story that effects people’s lives. It should be made with a spirited and curious mind.
Photoshop City/Corn
Here is a picture I took of myself a year ago. I added in the corn to symbolize my home town and the city represents my future.
Deep and flat space photography
I found two great pictures that represent deep and flat space photography. They both have great visual intensity. The picture of the wood in the ocean is flat because there isnt much depth. The picture of the boat in the ocean is very defined and wide open. The colors are vivid which makes the visual intensity increase.
