Reflection

Filed under: Uncategorized — KendalEverson @ 11:05 am

I truly have learned a lot in this class. I’ve learned how to properly apply light and movement to my films as well as how to properly use After Effects, though I still need more practice with it because I terrible at it. It was definitely my most difficult challenge this semester. My favorite project was actually the still image project because I was able to express myself artistically while trying something new. I would say that I learned that I only knew the basics of editing film in the beginning of the semester but now I’m starting to get better understanding. My film manifesto will appear darker after this final project, I’m not in a dark place yet those are the ideas that keep coming out.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a coming of age film that revolves around the character, Charlie and his freshmen year of high school. He wants to dive into high school fitting in with the other kids, but he cannot do so however, he is different. Soon he becomes friends with seniors, Sam and Patrick and their “misfit” group of friends. They help him feel more welcome in high school by including him in their various unusual activities, such as 80s music themed parties and Rocky Horror picture shows. As the movie progresses, Charlie develops feelings for Sam and begins thinking about ways to tell her how he feels. During this time, Sam begins dating Craig, a college student leaving Charlie stagnant. Meanwhile while this takes Patrick is involved in a undercover long term relationship with Brad, the star of the football team. While Brad keeps a girlfriend and pretends to be straight by day, at night he has an undercover relationship with Patrick that only Patrick’s friends and now Charlie know about. As Charlie becomes closer with these people he’s aware that by the end of the year things will be different, they will graduate and he will be stuck with 3 more years of school. During the Spring semester, Charlie begins dating one of the other girls in the group, Mary Elizabeth after a Sadie Hawkins dance leads too her saying they’re an item now. However this doesn’t last long as in a game of truth or dare when Patrick asks Charlie to “kiss the prettiest girl in the room” he kisses Sam instead of Mary Elizabeth destroying not just their relationship but his relationship with everyone. This hiatus ends following a fight that ensues between Patrick and Brad due to Brad denying his existence in school and calling Patrick a faggot. Charlie defends Patrick in the fight and regains the respect of his friends because of it. As the year comes to a close and Charlie finally reveals his feelings for Sam who learns that Craig had been cheating on her. They begin to express love for each other physically, but this triggers something in Charlie however which explains why he struggled to fit in with other students. Charlie was sexually assaulted as a boy by his Aunt Helen on his birthday, later that same night she dies in a car crash, he blames himself. His finding new love in Sam and having to see her leave for college the next day triggers a mental breakdown within him that lands him in a mental hospital. There he is finally able to tell his family what his late Aunt did to him and cope with it not being his fault. The best part of it all was that no matter what Sam and Patrick were there for him. He finally feels whole in life or as he describes it “infinite.”
The film contains many different visual elements in the form of color and lighting. Many of the scenes within the film are very dark in atmosphere and require special lighting such as when driving in a car. A very interesting scene that takes advantage of lighting and movement would be the scene where Charlie and his friends are driving through the tunnel.

This scene uses the artificial light from within the tunnel to keep the characters lit up while driving through the Fort Pitt Tunnel. There is most likely an additive light source involved as well however the light appears so natural that one cannot be too sure. Simple movement is performed through the tunnel and a tracking shot is used in order to follow them closely. The shot really does give the viewer the feeling of what it means to be infinite.

The project is going well so far. There’s been a change in the background music to something more fitting. But all is well. Screen Shot 2015-12-07 at 2.17.13 PM

Final Project Pitch

This will be a darker style film shot in black and white. The genre could technically be horror but its meant to just have an eerie feel. It revolve around friends sitting on a couch as an unknown person walks through the room in first person. The production techniques I use involve working with focus and contrast as well as constant panning. I used a Canon DSLR. The film should be less than two minutes though we will see. It will be backed by music, there are three songs in discussion. The biggest challenge will be shooting this in the dark and in black and white.

Collaboration

Personally I love working with others. I believe getting more than one opinion on an idea as well as working together on said idea is important. However it can get difficult in college, when everyone has different schedules making it hard to work outside of class.

Photography Concepts – Exposure

Filed under: Uncategorized — KendalEverson @ 2:48 pm

In order to have good exposure, one must utilize a combination of shutter speed, aperture and ISO. Together these three form the Triangle of Exposure. Exposure is viewed as a triangle because if one side is of the exposure is no longer perfect. It’s really about obtaining proper lighting and you use it, in order to do so all three photography ingredients must be utilized.

I really wouldn’t doubt that for some people.

Goals and Dreams

Filed under: Uncategorized — KendalEverson @ 11:05 am  Tagged

Hey! My name is Kendal Everson. I am a junior this year with a major in Film Production and a minor in Business. I hope to use filmmaking as a catalyst to see the world and what it has to offer. More realistically however, I just want a job doing something that I enjoy. My friends and I have a Youtube channel called Viximus Productions which is our attempt at web success. It was formed when my best friend and I both decided to become film production majors. I look forward to learning from this class…is what I’m expected to say right? But seriously, I’m ready to learn more.
