Essay #4
Choosing an ad for essay number four proved to be fun. The first thing that I noticed when I viewing this advertisement was the old woman lighting a cigarette, while holding it in her mouth, with a candle from a birthday cake. The next thing that I noticed was the number on the candle: 42. Lastly, I read the words at the bottom of the ad that said: “Smoking Causes Premature Aging: Lose the smoke keep the fire this World No Tobacco Day 31st, May.”The criteria that is evident in this advertisement are: words, people, and a contrast in color choices. The choices made by the publisher of this ad work effectively together.

1. In this essay I did well on writing the introduction and providing background information on glass recycling.
2. I need to spend more time brainstorming and writing my first draft.
3. I plan on getting started on essay #4 as quickly as possible and researching a topic/subject. I also plan to have others proofread it; whether it’s my roommate or a tutor at the learning commons.

For essay number 3 I plan to revise my thesis so that it better reflects what is in the body of my paper. I also plan to develop and explain more explicit details for the support of each of my solutions. Lastly, I plan to make to the refutation of my counterargument stronger and to focus on only one flaw.

For essay 3 I plan on working to clearly explain my argument to my audience. I plan on doing this by unifying my evidence back to my argument. I can also help make this clear by introducing more transitions that will help tie evidence (quotes, arguments, paraphrasing) more directly to my stance on the subject. And I will work to use topic sentences and references more explicitly.

What are your initial thoughts/feelings after completing Essay #2?
I mostly feel relieved that I got it done and I also feel accomplished; I did my best to take your comments from the rough draft and applied them to the final copy.
What do you think you did well?
I think that my introduction, thesis, and conclusion were the strongest parts of my paper.
What do you think you did not so well?
I am still unsure if I was able to make it sound like an argument instead of a report.
Try and identify what your weaknesses are and think about how you will work on those for Essay #3. What’s your plan of attack?
My weaknesses are my inability to argue through text; I am so used to summarizing and giving a report-style approach. My time management is also a big issue; I like to procrastinate and I really think that I should take this next essay step-by-step, so that I’m not overwhelmed before it’s due.

Summary of “They Say, I Say,” Quotations, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing
There are several different ways to introduce the ideas of others: whether they are general ideas that have become widely accepted, or an idea that you’re trying to present as your own. There are also ways to introduce something that is “implied or assumed.” The templates provided give you a chance to look at things in an analytical way.
Opening a debate with a summary of the different views gives you awareness and credibilitybefore establishing your opinion of the subject; use the writing process to find out where you stand. Another way to open a debate is to discuss a proposition that many can agree with to highlight the point(s) on which they disagree. Always keep the views of others in mind when writing an argumentative paper; this reminds your audience of the purpose of your writing.
Using templates for “they say” allows the writer to organize their ideas, in relation to their thesis, supporting evidence, counterargument, and conclusion.
Citing in a paper helps to avoid the troublesome problem of plagiarism. When citing, you must remember to cite ALL direct quotes, specific words, ideas, and information that an author said. You should only use direct quotes to provided examples or credibility to your argument or view. Also when providing specific historical information or when a well-stated
passage would lose meaning and clarity if paraphrased. Summarize to record main points of significance. Paraphrase to
keep details that prove important.
Use:
Italics for emphasis.
Ellipsis to omit words.
Brackets for insertions or changes.
You can integrate quotes at almost any point of a sentence: beginning, middle, end, or in the middle of your own words. Block quotes: used when quotes take up more than five typed lines. Indent the quote an inch from the left margin. Introducing quotes: you can introduce quotes using colons, commas, that. Punctuation: If a quote ends with a question mark or exclamation point, keep it and put the parenthetical reference and period outside of the quotation marks.
Avoid: incompatible verbs, omitting words that leave an ungrammatical sentence, and sentence fragments.
Documentation of sources: use in-text citations and a works cited page using the instructed formatting style.

The thesis statement of any paper should always highlight what the writer is talking about; the issues, topics, arguments, or problems that they will be discussing. It should provide insight on what the rest of the paper will be about and inform the audience of the purpose of the paper. The thesis should also state your position on the on the idea and give reasons why you feel this way. The thesis should then be interesting and arguable; makes a claim that others might want to argue against. It should clearly define your stance and assert your point of view of the topic. The thesis might also include ways to solve your problem and outline the main ideas of the rest of the paragraphs.

The question that I would like to answer: Are politicians speeches effective? Do they convince you enough to win your vote, to gain your trust, to believe in them? My audience would be the American public, specifically those voting in the elections this November. My purpose is to convince my audience of the effectiveness these speeches have. I plan to use speeches given by President Barack Obama and Republican nominee, Governor Mitt Romney, among other sources. Thesis: The rhetoric and language used by politicians is what gets the majority of their votes; not their policies and plans of actions. It is how they approach their audience and how successfully they get their point across to them. My opponents will more than likely say that politicians do not persuade to get votes; they lie. They might point out how little truth politicians actually say in their speeches.

After the peer review process I got some great feedback and the changes I intend on making are creating a stronger and more obvious thesis. I want to make my thesis evident and I want people to know what I am arguing for in my paper. I also plan on reducing some of my counterargument against cheerleading and having a more concise conclusion.
Filed under Uncategorized | Comment (0)Topic Proposal
The topic that I am proposing to discuss is the issue of cheerleading not being considered a sport. Cheerleading requires a lot of time, dedication, and hardwork; a lot of the same requirements for other sports. Yet, at the most, cheerleading is considered to be a club or activity. This subject means alot to me because I was a cheerleader for five years and as a squad we received so much grief about how what we did wasn’t that hard to do. This is just one of the many reasons that I am extremely passionate about this subject and want to write my argumentative essay about this topic.

The city of Lorain has a population of about 65,000 people. There are several towns, townships, and villages that are sub-cities of Lorain. I live in Amherst where President Barack Obama stopped by the pub Ziggy’s for a beer and some pizza. I went to Clearview High School in the Clearview School District which consists of the high school, middle school, and elementary school. In the four years that I attended Clearview our football team made it to the playoffs, our baseball team has won the conference championship, our girls volleyball team has won the district championship, and our boys basketball team made it the regionals where they played against Celina High School right here at BGSU. Our cheerleading squad, which I was a part of for 4 years, also competed in the district competition where we placed fourth.
Our district is pretty small which makes all of us closer together. Whenever a community member is in need, people in the Clearview community tend to go out of their way to lend a helping hand. For instance, earlier this year it was annouced that a valued member named Brad Anderson had cirosis of the liver (non-alcoholic). Immediately Facebook pages, blogs, and websites were made about this heartbreaking issue. People knew that something had to be done to help Mr. Anderson, who needed a considerable amount of money to get the transplant he desperately needed to survive. Fundraisers of all kinds were put together to help obtain some of this money. and of course every member who could help did help. And I am happy to say that Mr. Anderson finally had his operation last week and we’re all praying for everything to continue without a hitch. This sense of family and togetherness makes me proud to have been Clearview Clipper and to now be an alumni of that school.
Lorain is known for being extremely diverse. We host a festival every year that highlights the different cultures that our city and sub-cities are made up of. This festival attracts people from all over the state and sometimes the country. There are vendors and tents that sell German, Phillipino, Jamaican and all other kinds of foods from different parts if the world. There is a princess pageant that girls from different high schools in the area compete in for the title of the Lorain International Princess. They also have other events where people from different culture- based clubs can show off some the traditional dances, music, and outfits that are native to their city or country. Lorain is a special city that accepting of all ethnicities and embraces all cultures openly.
