Magazine offers internships, fellowship

Journalism students and recent graduates who want to report on natural resources, the environment and community issues can apply for this program in Paonia, Colorado.

High Country News is a nonprofit news publication that focuses on issues facing the western United States. Every year, the magazine offers four to six internship positions. The next session runs from mid-July to mid-December.

The organization provides free housing and a US$220 weekly stipend for interns, and free housing and a US$375 weekly stipend for fellows. To help defray moving costs, an additional US$500 travel stipend is available upon successful completion of the internship.

For all positions, a bachelor’s degree or equivalent and some prior journalism experience and/or education are preferred. Photographic experience and familiarity with audio and visual programs such as Final Cut Pro and Flash, as well as radio or video experience are all pluses.

Description:

University Hospitals is Ohio’s second largest health system, employing more than 26,000 people at more than 15 locations throughout northeast Ohio. It is recognized as a national healthcare leader in a number of disciplines and its medical experts are often called upon to offer insights to medical topics on a national and local level. UH has a long history of worldwide medical innovations, including being the birthplace of neonatology and cardiac defibrillation.

This is an unpaid, non-employee position to be filled by a college student enrolled as a Journalism or Public Relations major at an institution of higher learning, pursuing this position for college credit. The student should expect to receive well-rounded exposure, instruction, and participation in daily operations of internal and external communications and marketing efforts.

Intern will report directly to a designated employee in the Marketing and Communications group, working primarily from the UH television production studio and media offices located in the Mather Pavilion at UH Cleveland Medical Center main campus. UH main campus is a major part of the University Circle neighborhood, Cleveland’s cultural, educational, and research epicenter.

The scope of activities associated with the internship position may include:

  • Media relations support for any of the UH Cleveland Medical Center entities or service lines;
  • Producing content for the UH Digital Work Place (employee intranet) and social media.
  • Video or audio production—videography, editing, audio recordings, and live broadcasts;
  • Technical support—operation of technical areas associated with live or recorded events;
  • Marketing production;
  • Live streaming production;
  • Support for live events;

Intern will be under the direction of a University Hospitals employee at all times and will not be permitted to act independently as a representative of UH, nor will she/he be permitted to disseminate any information or content without prior approval of a UH Marketing and Communications supervisor or director.

Intern must:

  1. Maintain professional behavior at all times;
  2. Learn and adhere to the UH culture at all times, keeping in mind that our patients’ safety, privacy, and wellness are the primary focus;
  3. Adhere to all hospital guidelines, including functioning within HIPAA laws.

Internship will end as a result of failure to meet any of the above expectations.

2018 Pulliam Internship

The Eugene S. Pulliam Internship Program is named in honor of the late publisher of The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News. The program offers work at daily and nondaily newspapers in Indiana and encourages students to enter careers in newspapers.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Students must have at least one semester of coursework remaining following completion of the internship. Graduate students and former HSPA Pulliam interns are not eligible.
  • Applicants must be residents of Indiana or attend an Indiana college or university.
  • Students must have reliable automobile transportation to and from the workplace.

JoAnne Robinson Memorial Scholarship

WEWS News 5 is now accepting application materials for the JoAnne Robinson Memorial Scholarship established in 1999 to honor the memory of Executive Producer JoAnne Robinson. The scholarship is open to African-American college students who aspire to become broadcast journalists.

The winner of the 2017 JoAnne Robinson Memorial Scholarship was a Hampton University student majoring in communications and journalism.

We are looking forward to receiving application materials from students for the 2018 scholarship award. Please note that there is no application form for this scholarship, all items required for consideration are listed in the attached brochure.

Food writing awards

Greetings from the Association of Food Journalists. We are pleased to announce that AFJ’s 2018 Awards Competition is now accepting entries. The deadline is Thursday, March 1. Attached, please find the categories and rules for 2018. They also can be found at AFJ’s website.

AFJ encourages students at the undergraduate and graduate level to submit entries. There is no fee for qualified individuals to enter the student writing category. The first-place winner will receive $300. Finalists will be notified in May, with winners announced at an awards reception Sept. 27 at AFJ’s annual conference, Sept. 26-28 in Phoenix. You’ll find links to last year’s student winners here.

The contest is open to students as well as AFJ members and to food writers and editors who are not members of the association. If a student is not a member of AFJ, ask them to please consider joining.

Functions:      Provide assistance with reporting work for the annual conference sessions, development of web content, and general communications tasks for the administrative staff and members of a growing professional association.   • Follow news coverage related to MoveOn’s campaigns;
  • Assist with compiling and tracking of press and social media coverage of MoveOn’s work;
  • Build and maintain media lists around key campaigns;
  • Assist with press work and create content for distribution to journalists. Content is likely to include press releases, pitches, statements, talking points, messaging, op-eds, video scripts, and other media materials;
  • Be a member of MoveOn’s communications team, contributing to cross-team projects in a variety of ways;
  • Occasionally facilitate and take notes at meetings;
  • Have the opportunity to engage in MoveOn’s work in other exciting ways, including drafting content for social media, producing blog posts and other editorial content, and supporting key campaigns.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Regular eastern time zone morning availability is desired, but hours are negotiable and flexible;
  • Experience in journalism, media relations, or similar public-facing content production, including with a school paper or organization;
  • Experience with and interest in activism, advocacy, organizing, or politics;
  • Strong writing skills, including precise grammar, punctuation, and spelling, and knowledge of AP style.

Location: Position may be based anywhere in the Continental United States

Duration: Hiring immediately; interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis. This is a three-month internship with the possibility to extend to six months.

Center for Innovative Food Technology Internship

Since 1995, the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) has provided a unique blend of business solutions, innovation and technical expertise to the food processing, agricultural and manufacturing sectors.  These services are designed to enhance the economic performance of the industries and create new jobs.

CIFT has worked with hundreds of food companies, equipment suppliers, service providers, university researchers, governmental agencies, legislators, general manufacturers and many more.  As a result, many new technologies have emerged, industry best practices have been established, and novel business approaches have been discovered.  Through an industry-driven methodology, businesses have benefited throughout Ohio and beyond.

The marketing and communications department at CIFT will hire one interested student for an internship during the spring 2018 (Jan. through May) term.  The following areas will be some of the responsibilities for our intern who wants to learn while contributing to our organization’s non-profit mission:

  • Assist in maintaining timely social media content.
  • Event planning.
  • Write/edit content for printed materials including flyers, newsletters, brochures, advertisements, speaker bios, signage, etc.
  • Assist marketing and communications department in various projects.

Black Swamp Conservancy Events and Communications Internship

The Events and Communications Internship is a one-semester, unpaid position open to students wishing to gain experience in event planning and management, along with general communications programming. Intern will spend eight hours per week at the Conservancy, preferable two four-hour time periods. Other scheduling will be coordinated with staff. The Conservancy is located at 4825 Sugar Ridge Rd., Pemberville, Ohio, south of Perrysburg.

Essential Functions

The Outreach and Education Seasonal implements outreach and educational strategies that engage local communities in conservation and communicates the objectives of the Green Ribbon Initiative and The Nature Conservancy. The seasonal position will assist the Green Ribbon Initiative Partnership Specialist in achieving deliverables of multiple grants and help reinforce the efforts of the Green Ribbon Initiative and the Oak Openings Project Team. Many of the tasks will be geared toward increasing the participation of landowners in the Oak Openings Landowner Registry program, enrolling participants in the Adopt-A-Natural Areas program, improving public understanding of the benefits of nature in their community, empowering citizens to take action locally and connecting people to their globally rare surroundings. This is a six month, hourly position working between 25 and 40 hours/week based on project needs and the availability of the chosen applicant.

Responsibilities And Scope

  • Assist in writing/producing content for external communications such as news stories for the GRI e-newsletter, social media webpages, press releases, outreach letters, and/or brochures. Work with staff to update and/or generate text for website
  • Fact check, proofread, format, and edit as necessary
  • May create videos and other multimedia communications to supplement news stories
  • Assist in general office duties and logistical support for the Oak Openings Project Team such as assisting in grant required documents and database entry
  • May assist with event planning such as training workshops, landowner workshops, and other events.
  • Serve as a member of the Green Ribbon Initiative Education and Outreach Subcommittee.
  • Supervises no staff, but may help assist staff, volunteers, temporary staff, landowners and partners of the Green Ribbon Initiative.
  • Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • Opportunity to act independently on assigned tasks.
