Bloguin Seeks Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns Bloggers

We are currently looking for writers for two positions, to blog about the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians, and I wondered if any of your students might be interested. This will be an excellent opportunity for someone who would love to blog about their favorite team while gaining practical experience, developing their craft as a writer and creating a body of work.

The ideal candidates will have good writing skills and will write regularly and with fresh content year round, including the offseason. Writing/blogging experience is preferred but we are willing to accept the right person who has a vision for a great blog and demonstrates the ability and desire to accomplish that goal.

Interested students may apply by sending a sample article to me by email. The sample should be included in-text within the email rather than as an attachment. The sample article may be about anything related to the team, such as a recap of a previous game, an outlook on a particular player or position group, a take on current events, etc. Links to existing articles from a personal blog or other source may be used in lieu of a writing sample.

Here are some frequently asked questions and here is more information about us. To see what some of our blogs look like, here are a few of our NFL blogs you might want to check out.

STUDY MULTIMEDIA JOURNALISM IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE THIS SUMMER!

June 23-July 23, 2011
Do you dream of becoming a foreign correspondent? Do you want to learn multimedia storytelling skills? Do both this summer and have the time of your life with the multimedia journalism program in Perpignan, France co-sponsored by San Francisco State University and the Institute for Education in International Media (ieiMedia).

The program is open to English-speaking students from all colleges and universities, as well as recent graduates. Instruction is in English (except French classes) and students work with interpreters to report and shoot their stories. Preference is given to journalism, media, film or mass communication majors and students with experience on a college or professional publication.

Students spend four weeks studying international reporting, blogging, multimedia storytelling and videojournalism — as well as French language and culture — and report on the community of Perpignan, a charming Catalan city near the Spanish border. They then create a multimedia website about the city (see last year’s project here).
About Perpignan

Perpignan lies in the sunny Languedoc region of southwestern France, 8 miles west of the Mediterranean and 19 miles north of the Spanish border, within sight of the Pyrénées. The city, which passed back and forth between French and Spanish rule over the centuries, features a charming, pedestrian-friendly historic quarter; a daily market; several arts festivals in the summer and lively night life. Watch the fireworks shot over a 14th century fortress on the 14th of July (Bastille Day). Try escargots and other regional specialties at the local tapas bars and sip coffee at the sidewalk cafes. Lovely Mediterranean beach towns like Collioure and Argelès-sur-Mer are just a short bus or train ride away.

Features of the program:

Study with top international journalism professionals who have worked in France, Mexico, Australia, Italy and the Democratic Republic of Congo
Live in air-conditioned studio apartments with free Internet access, kitchenettes and private baths in a modern hotel
Study French at a respected language academy (students are divided into two groups — beginner and intermediate; other accommodations can be made for students fluent in French)
Travel on two free three-day weekends to nearby beach towns, the French Riviera, Barcelona, Paris or other cities in France or Spain
Tour French media outlets and local historic and cultural attractions
Program fee: $4,995 plus airfare (includes tuition, housing, ground transportation, equipment, cultural activities).

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis through Feb. 1, 2011. Students are encouraged to apply early since the program may fill before that. Late applications will be considered if spots are available.

Two Positions at Chronicle-Tribune, Marion, IN

We are currently looking for a business and education reporter. Our business reporter is moving to another paper in about a week and my last day as the education reporter will be Feb. 2. I decided to take another job not because I was unhappy where I am currently at but because I was offered a better opportunity. This is a great opportunity for a new reporter because they will have the chance to report on several big issues while still being able to write features and fluff.

If you would be interested and qualified for either position send your resume and clips to David Penticuff, editor, at dpenticuff@chronicle-tribune.com. The positions are also on JournalismJobs I believe.

Washington Media Scholars Foundation

The Washington Media Scholars Foundation creates scholarship, learning and career advancement opportunities for college students interested in public policy media strategy, research and management. The organization coordinates three programs of varying intensity to carry out this mission:

1. Media Scholars Program. Beginning with the Media Plan Case Competition, the Media Scholars Program identifies talented undergraduates from across the country and brings the finalists to Washington, DC for a week of networking and out-of-the-classroom educational opportunities with organizations such as Google, Politico, CNN and the Wall Street Journal. At a Networking Reception held at the Newseum, the foundation distributes $10,000 in scholarship awards.

2. The Media Mentors Program provides students with an experienced advocate who provides insight into making the most of your undergraduate experience to benefit your entry into the job market. Opened to students in their sophomore year and above, this program has a streamlined rolling application process, easing the administrative burden for busy students.

3. An additional Scholarship Program will launch in the summer of 2011. Details made available in the spring of 2011.

In the past, participating students have majored in advertising, marketing, public relations, political science and even astrophysics. Some have found work in Washington, DC immediately post-graduation, and others have found work closer to their home universities.

Please visit www.mediascholars.org to register your interest.
