About Fei

Dr. Fei Gao is a Professor of Instructional Design and Technology at Bowling Green State University. Dr. Gao’s research is focused on how to cultivate reflective and motivated learners by supporting their autonomy and competence in computer-assisted learning systems. More specifically, she has explored how to design adaptive online programs, such as gamification-based learning environments, 3D virtual reality simulation, and other online learning systems to improve learners’ cognitive, affective, metacognitive, motivational, and social dimensions of learning by enhancing learners’ awareness of and control over their learning processes. Her work has been published in top peer-reviewed journals in the field, such as the Internet and Higher EducationBritish Journal of Educational Technology, and Computers and Education. According to Google Scholar, her work has been cited for around 2000 times. She is associate editor of Online Learning Journal, and editorial board member of The Internet and Higher Education. She is the principal investigator (PI) of the NSF’s Cultivating Learners’ Autonomy to Improve Math Skills for STEM Learning (CLAIM-STEM) project ( July, 2022 – June, 2025).
