1. Do you feel an entity or individual demonstrated negligence in the facts presented in either the Popke or Steinbach article?  Justify your answer by using the definition and the requirements of negligence as presented in class.

After reading the article, I believe that individual(s) demostrated negligence.  Negligence is knowing what is right from wrong in most situations, especially those you are trained in, and completely doing the opposite whether or not you were aware of it.  The shot putter should have waited for everyone to be out of their way, and the referee should have been clear of the field. 

2. What role do you think the facility itself plays in this case and how can risk management and the prevention of negligence be included in the facility or area desgin process?  Include at least two examples from the text to support your answers. (Chapters 2 or 7).  These examples are the references for this assignment.  Additional outside references are not required but are welcome.

The facility does play a role in negligence prevention, however, with common sense it is apparent that the shot putters are dangerous.  With signage and proper gates and weighted nets behind the field events, facilities can only help caution so much.

Describe what you learned about the rewards and challenges in the profession of facility design and construction through Bob Waddle’s presentation in class. Compare BGSU’s progress in the area of capital improvements to at least two other institutions of higher education (US or Worldwide).

Bob Waddle has a very difficult position. Not only does he have input for buildings and their design from outside givers, but also the University administration and students. Challenges that he faces daily are

• problems with construction plans
• scheduling problems
• limited financial funding
• contracting issues

Although he may run into these problems very often, Waddle is also rewarded very often through

• financial donations
• recognition through campus
• intrinsic rewards

Comparing BGSU capital improvements to OSU, there is no comparison.  OSU may have older buildings and small living quarters, but they do make an effort to upkeep the buildings they have and increase the number of modern buildings to attract new students.  Comparing BGSU capital improvements to Toledo, there is some comparison.  With the new Stroh Center and Wolfe Center we will be more outstanding, but as for now I believe we have very comparable academic buildings.

Assess the BGSU campus.  Develop a list of at least 10 positive examples and 10 negative examples of designing for inclusion (list format is acceptable). Link to ADA related information at BGSU or other institutions/facilities to broaden the scope of your discovery on this campus.

Positive Examples

1. Ramp to Hayes Hall west entrance
2. Elevators in Student Union
3. Restrooms located on all first floors
4. Clear signage around campus
5. No steps on walkways to and from buidlings
6. Wheelchair ramp on Library entrance
7. Handicap parking
8. Braille on newer building room signs
9. University provides communication help in classes using computers and sign language
10. Wave-use technology in restrooms in case someone can’t hold down facet buttons or pump paper towel dispensers

Negative Examples

1. No handicap ramps to buildings like the Education Building
2. Small dinning areas to maneuver wheelchairs or walkers
3. Too steep of ramp into Epplers west entrance
4. Constant construction creates delays in travel
5. Inconsistency of technology such as elevators
6. No extra desks without attached chairs
7. Transportation around buildings like Eppler take twice as long because there is only one elevator with many floor levels
8. Buildings like Eppler can be confusing to navigate, especially to mentally disabled
9. No Braille markings on some buildings and their rooms
10. Foyers have multiple doors to enter

Tiffany Sotet, a recent undergrad here at BGSU, has now moved on to bigger and better things. Her sports management and marketing studies at BGSU has led her to where she is now, the Cleveland Cavaliers in sales. Tiffany’s presentation entitled “The Truth about Working in Pro Sports” was very enlightening. Although I do not have any actual proof of the presentation, I do have the information she gave us regarding getting a position after college.

Tiffany busted a few myths regarding working in pro sports such as; salary, hours, work environment and the truth about competition. However, what I took away from her presentation, because I do not wish to work in sales, is her information on how to get the job.

She notes that having a practicum and internship are very important. NETWORKING is most important!! During her presentation she asked for all resumes brought to be given to her, but no one had one. Sotet stated that her boss had asked her to bring back a stack of resumes (thinking all students would bring one to a presentation) and that he would be very unhappy with her now that she has nothing. Although the presentation part was only 15minutes long, she stressed the importance of going above and beyond what is expected of you in your position.

I believe this was a very helpful presentation simply because it is a very realistic topic and situation.

Day 1, After working hard last week, fall break got the best of me. So with this break of excercise, I’ve decided to start again today. Goal for today is 3 miles, plus strength training. Wish me luck!

4. Extensive blogs by team and sport offer potential for patrons to follow unfamiliar sports
5. Partnerships with Amazon.com and Art.com have allowed the website to sell low cost sport books, dvds and posters

Threats
1. Scams on tickets may be found
2. Identity theft is a possibility when bloggers post personal information regarding purchases
3. Negative blogs posted on top of another bloggers post creates hostility
4. Potential of computer hacking with username and password
5. Loss of patrons because of weaknesses listed

As we discussed in class, Brooklyn and its community members of all kind had different opinions about the project proposal to “rebuild” the city. Making a comparison to our feelings we might have in that situation to those on the video was easy to decide who we were most alike. I had chosen the bar owner. Both of us agreed that although the plans were nice, it’s not necessary to demolish an entire area full of culture, tradition and history. Instead of rebuilding everything, community buildings were most important and useful to us. Projects such as daycares, sports arenas and community centers would most likely get a large number of “yes” votes. This large number of votes may make big businesses or prosperous families want to be recognized by the community for their conscious efforts to give back through donations to these buildings.
Donations and grants are one of the best ways to help finance a building project. These acts of kindness or publicity from the government, businesses or families are vital because of the complimentary funds that are given. No interest means less costs overall. According to http://www.epa.gov/greenbuilding/tools/funding.htm creating a building that meets green standards within your state can possibly help you retain more funds once you’re through the application process. Sites such as The Funders’ Network and Home Depot focus on creating sustainable living or community projects if you can prove the need for their aid.
It is easy to see that non-for profit organizations have already jumped on this wagon to search out donations from the community. This is visible at many websites, but particularly http://www.brooklyncommunityfoundation.org/grants/heights-amp-hills-infrastructure-building-project where you can view the grants they have already received and where you can personally donate online.
As I started to mention above, large donations from businesses and families creates good publicity. This good deed is also followed by naming rights to that specific facility. A chart located in our book on page 391(12th edition) states stadiums, sponsor names, sponsor amount per year and when the contract expires. For Coors Brewing Company to sponsor the Colorado Rockies Stadium, Coors Field, indefinitely they are consistently receiving invaluable marketing benefits from their field being associated with the Rockies.

Thad Long, Recreation and Wellness Associate Director, was our tour guide for our class SRC tour. During the tour we visited the most often seen rooms of the building such as: the weight room, the cardio room, the rock wall and the swimming pool area. However, there were many rooms in which most students will never get to see that we were able to view. Who would have known there were so many hallways, offices and rooms included in the facility!

The maze-like hallways were interesting to me because they did not seem very functional. Some were dangerous and confusing. For functionality, I do not understand why they are so continuous but they are very interesting to walk through.

Mr. Long had mentioned at the end of our tour (in a meeting room) that it has been difficult for the Recreation Center to receive funding for the facility from the University. It was very upsetting to hear this because it seems each year, or semester, administration continues to receive raises in their salary. Even if there were an argument about this situation that the raises are not connected in any way to the funding for facilities, the most important part of a university is the students. Quality buildings, education and educational equipment are essential for higher education learning….not which administrator gets paid the most.
